this one is super small and not much evidence AT ALL, but that 5SOS was created as an industry plant to dominate over 1D. this quickly falls apart when you realize
5sos had an organic start as some kids wanting to make a band and
1D invited 5sos to open for them. 1D would never do this if they were concerned about competition
5sos never dominated 1D while 1D was a band. i suppose you could argue that now, but def not at the time. even now 5SOS jokes about "being a band everyone knows of and yet nobody knows them at the same time"
