I sit on the couch upside down. I flip through channels. "ALL RIGHT EVERYONE LETS GO!" I flip off the couch and walk over towards the railing. "For what? I didn't hear a bell." Buck states. "It's Chimney." We sprint into action and go down the fire pole.
We pull up to the accident. We hop out of the truck. We follow behind Bobby. "Hang back guys." He states. We look at each other. "It can't be that bad right?" I ask.
"He's alert and talking, doesn't appear to be in any pain. Got a piece of rebar through his skull." He explains as we walk over to the car. "How is that even possible?" "Oh it's possible. Brain tissue has no nociceptors. It can't feel pain." Hen states. "But what about the rest of his head?" I ask. "Well he's in shock."
"Now listen guys this hasn't registered yet. He knows he's pinned but that's it so we got to be cool." Cap states. "So of this things right between his eyes can he see it?" "I don't know what he can see."
Okay that's pretty bad but he's alive that's all that matters. Hen does a check up on him from the passengers seat. I stand next to Bobby to make sure he's okay.
"Airways sound good." "What's your pain level?" Bobby asks. "Not much pain. Uh I don't think there's any spinal damage. I can feel my legs but when I try and move my head-" "DONT!" The three of us shout.
"Just...be still." "what's going on?" he asks us confused. "Wh-wh-why are you guys like cutting me out of here?"
"It's complicated."
"Why?" "you've been injured, Chim," he states. "Well, how bad is it?" "it's not good." I glare at Buck and his mouth gapes open.
"Well, I want to see it." "mm mm no you do not," I state. "Yeah, I do. Tiny show me." "okay but I think you betta, not knowin'" I state.
I pull out my phone and take a video. "You sure you wanna see this?" I ask. "Show it to me." I click on the video. "Holy crap. How come I'm not dead?" "Because you are the luckiest and the unluckiest son of a bitch on the face of the earth all at the same time," he assures. "Hey uh guys I can't even feel this." "I know."
"All right well please get me out of here before I start to..." "all right we're working on it. Normally I'd be consulting with my smartest EMT. But right now he's got a rebar stuck in his head."
They managed to secure him in the car and transport him in the car. "Hey, Buck. How's the car man? Is it a total loss?" he asks. "Nah man you...probably buff most of that out." he lies. Oh my God, he's thinking again.
"Great. Good."
We get to the hospital and we get him out from there.
First May now Chimney. Why is my entire family accident-prone?
I drink some water at my desk as we wait on news on Chimney. "How longs it take to pull a rod out of a guy's skull anyway?" "you ever heard of that saying 'it ain't brain surgery'? Well, this is." she says flatly. "What's 3 across for when doubled in...?" "just got off the phone with the surgeon," Bobby says walking in.
We look at him in anticipation. "He's alive?" "he's alive." we sigh in relief. "He still have both his eyes?" "yes."
"Any...a-any brain damage?" "there were some complications when they took the rebar out. He started hemorrhaging. They got the bleeding under control. But had to put him in a medically induced coma. They'll let us know if his condition changes." he explains. "Like if he wakes up," I ask. "Or if he doesn't." I sigh heavily.
"Yeah."
As worried as we are about Chimney. Hed still want us to finish the job.
We responded to a 911 call about what I assume to be kidnapping or attempted murder.
Because who leave people in a crate to die?
"Buck...get the tools." he does as asked. "Yo Hen Tiny. Is it wrong I was stoked there was an emergency? I was climbing the walks back at the house." "well all were and yeah it's wrong," she states. "But so right." I state.
"Were not here to blow off steam. We're here to help." "And then drink as a distraction."
We get the people out if the crate. We tend to a nonresponsive kid. We start chest compression but he's not letting up. His parents are crying out for him. "Come on kid. Just one breath. A wheezy one anything." "alright give me something." he gasps awake. I sigh in relief.
After work we go to the hospital to visit Chimey. "He's a tough not. He's gonna be in this for a few days. Intubation tube us out obviously but the catheters still in." "can he hear us." I ask. "I always treat them like they can. You got two minutes and then I'm kicking you out." we step into the room.
We stand around his bed. "Last time I was at the hospital this frequently I pushed my brother down the stairs." I state. "If you were awake you would've laughed."
Bobby grabs his hand. "Hey, Chim. We're all here for you buddy." I crouch down and rest my chin on the side of the bed. "H-hey. I-i was thinking maybe when you come back to work um you know you should do The Maneuver instead of me." we look at Buck. "To motivate him to get better." "He can't do The Maneuver," she whispers.
"Yeah, he can. Hey Chim you can do The Maneuver. Right?" he holds a thumbs up. We all chuckle.
"Chim. I um...I tried to get a hold of your parents. There's a 16-hour time difference with Seoul you know so maybe... maybe that has something to do with it." "yeah, it's all right. His family's right here." Bobby states.
"Please don't ever let him do The Maneuver." "Come on Hen let 'im have his lil Spiderman moment." I joke. We all laugh.
"Well see when he gets up." "let's be clear."
