Blue PoV.
I annoyingly woke up in the middle of the night to stirring beside me. Confused, I looked up to see a panicked Dust sitting at the edge of the bed, going back and forth between his shoulders raised and arms stiff at his side, and cradling himself. I didn't know what to do. He seemed disturbed.
"Dusty, is everything all right?" I whispered. I didn't want to awaken any of the kids and have them concern themselves with their Dad's confusing mannerisms.
He didn't reply, instead starting to hyperventilate and murmur to himself. My eyes widened as I slowly crawled over and sat with him.
"Did you hear me?"
He didn't reply again. How disturbed did he have to be to ignore me like this? He never ignored me.
"Dusty, you seriously should go back to sleep. And take your hoodie off. You look overheated."
Dust listened to me this time, thankfully, removing his hoodie and lying back down. He looked peaceful when he finally fell back asleep. But I couldn't help but wonder how long that peace would last. He had been having trouble sleeping lately, but I'm not sure why. Sprinkle thinks it's reasons related to Fury. That sorta makes sense. Dust is really attached to Fury. That urged me to go check on the boys. It was late, but that was fine. I was mostly a night owl anyway.
The upstairs hallway was completely dark, save for a little bit of light that crept under the twins' bedroom door. They slept with a nightlight on. I continued down the hallway until I found Fury's room. I opened it to find him awake, curled up in a ball under his covers, staring at the floor. Sprinkle sat beside him, mumbling something I couldn't make out even if I tried hard enough.
"Why are you boys awake this late?" I asked. "It's one in the morning."
"Fury had a bad dream. A really bad dream."
That made sense to me. Even Sprinkle looked worried and uncomfortable.
I walked over to them and sad down on the other side of Fury, putting my arm around him. But I wasn't as good at comforting the boys as Dust was. The least I could do was use my motherly instincts and try.
"Fury, honey, what happened?"
He didn't like me in the least, I could tell. Fury was one of the most challenging kids I knew, aside from apparently Crescent and his brothers. I didn't talk to their mother often, but during the rare times I did, Killer made living with children sound like a really annoying chore.
"Fury... It's okay if you don't want to talk to me, but I just want you to know that I love you and will always be ready to talk if you need me. That's what I'm here for."
Fury sighed, leaning further against Sprinkle. I kissed his forehead and left the room.
But once I returned to my own bedroom, Dust was awake again, freaking out over something.
Oh, the crazy crap that happens at my house at one in the morning...
I sat down with Dust and put my arms around him, trying to get him to calm down and talk to me. But he wouldn't do that. Just like Fury wouldn't, except it wasn't because he didn't like me. I never knew Dust's reasons for anything anymore. He was a mystery, but a joy to have around at the same time.
So, instead of forcing him to talk to me, the two of us just sat in silence, enjoying each other's company...
...
...
At least, I hoped Dust was enjoying my company.
