As time passed, the group continued to settle into their new surroundings at the community center. They found ways to make the best of the situation, despite the challenges they faced. Ava and Miko were able to join the rest of the group after a few days of being separated, and they quickly became part of the close-knit group.
Richie and Patrick grew closer as they worked together on various tasks, and Richie found himself genuinely interested in getting to know Patrick better. Meanwhile, Sam continued to have some awkward moments around Richie, but they tried to ignore it and carry on as usual.
The group also grew closer to Mr. Anderson, who quickly became a sort of parental figure to them. They found comfort in his presence and his guidance, especially as the situation at the community center grew more dire.
As the days passed, however, it became clear that the resources at the community center were dwindling. The food supply was getting smaller by the day, and people were starting to become more frantic as they worried about how they would survive in the long term.
Patrick, Jeremy, Sam, and Richie were currently working on the rooftop, there were some leaks that happened here when it rained so they assigned a few people to fix it.
As the four of them worked on patching up the leaks, they chatted casually to pass the time.
"So, Jeremy, what do you usually do for fun outside the city?" Richie asked, trying to strike up a conversation with the quiet boy.
Jeremy shrugged. "Help my grandpa with the farm mostly. We have a few animals, cows and pigs. It's hard work but it keeps us busy."
"That sounds cool," Patrick said, "I've never been on a farm before."
Sam chuckled. "I can't imagine you on a farm, Patrick. You'd be the city slicker who can't handle the smell."
Patrick laughed. "Hey, I can handle it. I just prefer the smell of coffee shops and bookstores."
Richie grinned. "Ah, the cultured type."
They all laughed and continued to work, the sound of hammering and chatter filling the rooftop. It was a small moment of levity amidst the tension of their situation.
The group worked on the rooftop, they suddenly heard a loud noise coming from below. At first, they thought it was just another fight, but then they heard screams and groans that made them realize that it was something much worse.
They quickly made their way to the edge of the roof and peered down. To their horror, they saw a zombie breaking through one of the windows on the first floor. The creature was covered in blood and its eyes glowed with a ravenous hunger. They didn't know how this happened but people started to panic, the zombie quite immediately lunged at a survivor. The zombie tore at his neck, eating him alive. The survivor grasped at the zombie, trying to push it off, screaming and crying whilst the other people were too shaken to runaway, then suddenly..... Silence, the survivor went quiet. The body of the survivor fell as the other people screamed and run away. The zombie started to tore apart other people and the chaos was happening everywhere.
Richie's heart was racing as he tapped Sam's shoulder, trying to get his attention. Sam turned to him, his eyes wide and full of panic.
"Sam! Sam!" He shook him. "We need to go find everyone and get out of here." Richie said urgently.
Sam nodded, looking grateful for the distraction. They made their way through the chaos, dodging panicked people and stumbling zombies. As they reached their tent, they saw that Leah and Pierce were already packing up their things.
"Come on, we need to go," Richie said to them. "We'll explain everything on the way."
But just as they were about to leave, Jeremy came running up to them, looking frantic.
