"For some inexplicable reason, a sense of unease washed over me. A short while ago, Eduardo had arrived, and the two of us were engaged in a conversation in the office. Eduardo was occupied with some paperwork when the entrance suddenly swung open, drawing our attention to Michael's presence.
"Eduardo and Liliana, do you need to go?" He uttered in a panic-stricken voice.
"Go? What do you mean?" Eduardo inquired.
My heart began to pound rapidly as I observed the distress on Michael's countenance. Apologetically, he glanced in my direction while rising to his feet. Instinctively, I placed a hand on my pregnant abdomen.
"It's Sebastian, he's in the hospital."
"What?!" I exclaimed.
Eduardo hastily gathered his belongings, and I swiftly trailed behind him. "You must remain here."
With a shake of my head, I retorted, "No, Eduardo, I cannot stay here. My husband is in the hospital. I need to ascertain what has transpired."
Michael descended alongside us and guided us into another SUV. My heart raced at an alarming rate. Please let Sebastian be alive.
"What happened to Sebastian? Why is he hospitalized?" Eduardo implored, raking his fingers through his hair as Michael maneuvered the vehicle out of the parking spot and onto the main road.
Engaging the transmission and accelerating down the highway toward the hospital, Michael disclosed, "Diego contacted me and informed me that there has been a car accident. The details remain uncertain, but he managed to reach out to Diego on your behalf. Consequently, I came to fetch both of you."
"What about Taylor?" I interjected, attempting to calm myself, although the pursuit seemed futile. How could I possibly be composed when my husband lay in the hospital, potentially in a coma? Who knows?
"He is in critical condition. Diego relayed that the doctor doubts his chances of survival," Michael elucidated.
Retrieving my phone from the pocket of my jacket, I noticed a few missed calls from Diego. I promptly dialled his number and placed the phone against my ear, awaiting his response. He picked up on the first ring.
"Diego? Have you received any updates? How severe is it? Will he pull through?" I inquired, my chest growing heavy with each passing moment. The silence was unbearable.
I heard Diego sigh on the other end. "We do not possess any concrete information as of yet. We do know that the other driver involved in the accident is alive, but there is no news regarding Sebastian. Hopefully, upon your arrival, there will be an update, allowing us to see him," Diego responded.
Eduardo gently massaged his temples as Michael skilfully parked the car outside the hospital. “Alright Diego, I'll meet you inside,” I informed him as Michael pulled into the nearest available parking spot.
After ending the call, Eduardo and I stepped out of the vehicle in search of answers. We entered the hospital, and soon spotted Diego patiently waiting for us.
Approaching the reception desk, I noticed the receptionist named Danielle. With courtesy, I addressed her, “Hi, Danielle,” glancing at her name tag. “I'm here to see Sebastian Knight, if that's possible. I'm listed as one of his authorized visitors.”
Danielle nodded, her gaze focused on the computer screen. “He is currently in surgery, but you can wait outside his room if you'd like. It's a private ward on level 4, area E,” she informed me.
Acknowledging her response, I turned to Diego and Eduardo and gave a slight nod. “Let's go,” I said, leading the way towards the elevator.
Upon its arrival, the three of us stepped inside, ensuring the doors closed before anyone else could join us. Our safety was a priority, and we couldn't afford any risks at this moment.
“Michael, I need you to contact your friend Simon and obtain the CCTV footage from the accident site. Additionally, I want you to try and uncover the responsible party behind this incident,” Eduardo instructed as he ran his fingers through his silver hair.
“Yes, sir,” Michael swiftly replied, typing on his phone and bringing it to his ear to make the necessary arrangements.
Exiting the elevator, we made our way to Sebastian's room. I approached a concerned receptionist standing at the counter and inquired about the location of his room. She pointed towards it, and I took a seat on one of the nearby chairs, letting out a sigh as I closed my eyes. I had never felt such nerves before.
Eduardo and I glanced up abruptly as the elevator doors opened once again. Before us lay Sebastian, stretched out on a gurney, his head and ribs bandaged. “My goodness,” Eduardo murmured in awe.
The doctors wheeled him into the room, expertly setting up the necessary equipment. Words failed me as I faced this sight. Even for someone like me, who always had something to say, there were no words to express what I was witnessing.
“I am Nurse Chandler, and this is Dr Richards. We have been assigned to care for Sebastian for the next few days. Mr Knight is fortunate to have survived with minimal injuries. Unfortunately, he sustained a head trauma that resulted in a minor bleed. We were fortunate to have detected the bleed in time," Dr Chandler consulted his notes before continuing. "He has four broken ribs and two fractured ribs, which required us to bind them for stabilization. There is a scar on his temple where he impacted his head, likely on his window. If all goes well, Mr Knight should be able to be discharged in a few days, although his physical activity will be limited."
Eduardo nodded, glancing towards me to ensure I was coping with the news. Honestly, I was overwhelmed and feeling numb. Eduardo placed a comforting hand on my shoulder.
"What about the driver, Taylor?" Eduardo inquired.
Doctor Richards sighed, "I regretfully inform you that he did not survive, as I have been informed."
Eduardo nodded, acknowledging, "I heard. There was another vehicle involved. Are the occupants of that car okay?"
Given the circumstances, we did not have any updates regarding their condition. It was crucial for us to avoid any responsibility, especially with my impending childbirth and efforts to support Tamara.
"I apologize, but we are unable to provide any information about their status. However, you are welcome to visit Mr Knight," Dr Richards responded.
Eduardo nodded, leading me into the hospital room. As I approached Sebastian, I grasped his hand and tenderly pressed my lips against it.
"I promise you, my love, I will uncover the person responsible for this. When I do, they will face the consequences," I assured him as I took a seat beside his bed.
Time seemed to stand still as I waited for Sebastian to regain consciousness, my gaze never leaving his body. I feared that if I looked away, he might vanish. Placing a kiss on his knuckles, he let out a groan.
He remained silent for a moment before mustering a smile that soon faded into a frown. "Lily, I was so frightened... I have never been so scared in my life. All I could think about was being without you and missing the birth of our children."
Comforting him, I guided his hand to my belly. "It's alright, my love. You are safe." I couldn't help but shed a tear. "Taylor should have fulfilled his responsibilities and prevented this from happening. His negligence almost cost you your life. I am relieved he is no longer with us.
Sebastian maintained a silent demeanor as he directed his gaze towards me. "Oh, my dear, please refrain from uttering such words. Surely, you do not intend to express such sentiments."
In agreement, I nodded my head and delicately wiped away a tear. "I genuinely mean it. Perhaps if you had employed a different chauffeur, this unfortunate incident could have been averted."
"My love, such occurrences are bound to manifest. I am always subjected to targeted acts due to my status. I am grateful for your unwavering support."
Before I could respond, Eduardo approached with a smile aimed at Sebastian, followed by a shift in focus towards me. "We have obtained some information. May we have a moment outside?"
Concurring, I nodded and rose from my seat, tenderly holding my protruding abdomen, then proceeded to exit the room alongside Eduardo.
Curiosity piqued, I inquired as soon as the door was closed. "What have you discovered?"
Diego retrieved his tablet, producing the CCTV footage obtained by Simon. Together, we meticulously observed the crash play out frame by frame. Astonishingly, we witnessed Taylor deliberately accelerating in order to collide with the oncoming vehicle.
What on earth?
Upon replaying the footage, disbelief washed over me as I struggled to fathom Taylor's involvement. What could be his motive for orchestrating such an act?
"What in the world!" I exclaimed in frustration. "How is it possible for Taylor to stoop to this level?"
"After scrutinizing his financial records, we discovered that five million dollars were transferred into his account yesterday morning, prior to this incident. Although we have yet to trace the source, Scott is currently pursuing the matter," Diego elucidated.
