Ethan trudged through the mud, his boots sinking deep into the earth. He glanced back at Mia, who was struggling to keep up with him. "Are you okay?" he asked, reaching out to steady her.
Mia nodded, her face flushed with exertion. "I'm fine. Just a little out of breath."
Ethan took her hand and led her to a nearby rock, where they could rest for a moment. "We need to find some shelter soon," he said, scanning the horizon for any sign of civilization. "The rain's getting heavier, and we can't afford to get sick."
Mia nodded, feeling a sense of gratitude towards Ethan for helping her escape. "Thanks for the help," she said, looking up at him with a smile. "You really didn't have to do that."
Ethan chuckled, "Well, you know what they say, 'no man left behind'," he said, winking at her. "Although I have a feeling you just wanted to have a human shield in case we ran into any wild animals." He continued, grinning.
Mia then rolled her eyes, "On second thought, we did ran into wild animals so, yeah, human shield." She responded, standing up ready to walk.
Ethan laughed, "You're funny", he said. "But in all seriousness, I'm just glad we're both safe and sound." He smiled.
Mia smiled back, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. Even in the midst of their difficult circumstances, Ethan's humor managed to lift her spirits. How did she end up walking with a stranger escaping from the people trying to chase her?
