02 - WHAT'S YOUR NAME?
"good morning hitoshi!"
the peppy voice isn't one he can place to a name right away, so he doesn't open his eyes.
the voice doesn't falter, and kept talking. "how did you sleep? i stayed up all night reading mangas," the voice laughed.
"good morning, l/n," he heard the voice of his best friend coming into the classroom.
"good morning midoriya," the voice replies. shinsou frowns. why is midoriya talking to the voice? rather reluctantly, the purple haired boy lifts his head from the comfort of his arms and opened his eyes to see the girl from yesterday sitting on the desk in front of him, shinsou taking the seat to his right. that's right, he made a friend yesterday.
"which mangas do you read?" shinsou asks her, narrowing his eyes as he awaits her answer.
she brightens, glad that he asked her a question. putting a finger to her chin, she thinks about her answer for a bit. the way the lilac haired boy is staring at her makes her feel like he was going to asses her based off her answer, so she wanted to make a good impression.
"i read all genres!" she decides on. "romance mangas are my guilty pleasure though, i can't get enough of them!"
midoriya smiles at that, and shinsou nudges him with his elbow in warning. "that sounds a lot like your favorites, shinsou."
ah, hell. shinsou sighs, turning away slightly as the attention of the doe eyed girl was turned to be fully on him.
"you read romance mangas?" she looks at him as if he just told her he hung the stars from the sky. he braces himself for the teasing remarks that he knew were coming, as they always did when someone found out about his interests, his stomach twisting uncomfortably. he brushes the uncomfortable emotion off to stare blankly ahead.
"what are your favorites?" her eyes are closed as she grins widely, so she misses the shocked look on shinsou's face.
his expression is schooled back to its regular indifference by the time she looks at him, wondering why he didn't respond, and midoriya smiled at the situation. it seemed he wasn't needed to let the two of them get to know each other better.
and so he stood up, leaving without a word as shinsou takes out his phone from his pocket and showed the h/c haired girl a photo of a manga cover. kaleidoscope, the title read.
she squeals with joy. "you read ground zero's books too? i haven't checked out kaleidoscope yet, but i love the new one she's been publishing in the monthly magazines, her take on romance is so interesting!"
"wait," shinsou feels an amused expression come across his features, and by that he meant his eyelids lift so slightly an unnoticeable amount. "what makes you think ground zero is a girl?"
"um, well-" she looks a bit embarrassed. "i just kind of assumed?"
now, shinsou could tell her that ground zero was the explosive blonde haired boy in their class, but he also rather liked being the only one who could torment bakugo with his secret, and shinsou didn't enjoy many things.
"i don't know either, but ground zero sounds kind of masculine, don't you think?" shinsou leans back in his chair, and his voice raises just enough that said manga author and his red haired seatmate look over from their seats in the row behind shinsou.
kirishima stands up and lugs the blonde sitting beside him to come chat with a smile. bakugo follows, looking distressed, meaning his intense scowl that he kept on his face at all times had changed to an attempt to drill holes into shinsou's head.
not able to hide his distaste for shinsou, the murder visible in his eyes at the sound of his pen name should have scared shinsou into silence. but instead, shinsou only lazily responded to the handshake that bakugo's seatmate kirishima held out a hand for, and let the redhead mold his fingers into whatever odd pattern kirishima had come up with that day for a handshake.
"so what's so manly that we're talking about?" kirishima asks. plopping into the seat midoriya had been sitting in, he wiggles his eyebrows at shinsou.
"probably something fucking lame," if shinsou didn't know any better, he wouldn't have noticed bakugo's voice wavering as he insulted himself. shinsou hums in amusement. bakugo catches the other boy's gaze and mimes slicing his neck with one hand. if shinsou gave a shit, which he didn't, he would have felt bad for bullying the guy. instead, he lets the side of his lip curl into what should be a smug smile, but he ended up looking like he tasted something expired, and didn't say a word.
the girl, who shinsou has just realized he has yet to ask for her name, laughs loudly at this little interaction, and he squints at the brightness she seems to emanate.
"hey," he begins, and she looks over at him, wiping a tear from her eye. "what's your name?"
"you don't know her name? that's not manly at all dude, we've been classmates for so long!" kirishima claps shinsou on the shoulder, and the he shudders, his body feeling like the organs inside had been rattled from the impact.
"okay, ask bakugo what my full name is," he replies with a sigh, and kirishima acknowledges defeat with a grim nod.
"i don't need to know your name, you fucking extra!" bakugo says in a rather pissy tone.
"i'm l/n y/n," the girl introduces, choosing to ignore bakugo (shinsou starts to warm up to her just the slightest bit after that). "it's nice to meet you!"
shinsou doesn't know why conversation has come so easily when it's with this girl, but he goes along anyway. he folds his arms and lifts one eyebrow. "i've already met you though?"
a hand comes to her chin as she thinks for a moment with an intense frown. shinsou almost laughs when l/n brightens comically. she's like an open book, he can practically see the gears turning in her head. "but you didn't know my name, so it's your first time meeting me," she reasons.
"then it's nice to meet you too, y/n."
. . .
she grinned. "can i call you hitoshi then? if you can call me y/n."
"no." is his reply.
she pouted. "that's so not fair!"
the first real smile l/n has seen shinsou make since she first laid eyes on him is stunning indeed. "i know," he said, and he looks so content and happy in her eyes she cannot bring herself to argue.
