Chapter 3: Coincidences
The boy was tall and muscular. Not the obsessive compulsive gym type muscular that never ceased to make me uncomfortable to the point of anxiety, but the hot, lean type of muscular that came from a love of outdoors and strenuous manual labor. His skin was pale and flawless, his royal blue hair cropped and spiky. He was totally rocking the whole "I'm a rebel that just rolled out of bed" look with his black leather jacket, white tee, ripped black jeans, and spotless black Timerlands.
But what hypnotized me most were those wide, fiery eyes, each framed by long dark eyelashes.
He had heterochromia.
The eye on the left was a glowing red, like a big liquid ruby. The one on the right was a bright, electrifying blue, like lightning glass. I'd never seen it before. Sure, I'd known that heterochromia existed. I'd even done a paper on it as one of the many extra-credit assignments I didn't need in my freshman year. But I'd never seen it in real life before.
Mrs. Kay looked indignant as she scoffed. "What did you just say to me, young man?"
The boy raised an eyebrow, the same royal blue as his hair, and said in a calm, even tone, "Are you deaf or are you just stupid? Look, I don't know who you are and I really don't care, but you can't just go around picking on innocent girls. Especially not with how old you are. Mybe you'd like to take it out with someone your size?" The boy stepped closer and crossed his arms over his chest, suddenly looking way more intimidating than I thought before.
Mrs. Jay and her friend, who were previously sitting in two plush love seats, hopped up and backed away faster than I would've thought their old age allowed.
The boy's perfect, blood red lips pulled into a terrifyingly alluring smirk. "Yeah. Didn't think so. Now get out of here before you really piss me off."
Mrs. Jay and her friend wasted no time in gathering there things and practically sprinting to the elevator.
I gaped at the guy as he crossed smoothly toward me, crouching down to my level though his well over six-foot frame still towered over my five-three. Instead of asking me if I was ok, like anybody else would've done, he just smiled softly. My heart beat quickened so intensely that I thought it would jump out of my chest as the tiny gesture lit up his face. He looked like an Adonis before, but now he was just perfect.
I felt as if a million live wires were shooting electricity through my body as he used his thumb to brush away the tears I didn't realize were still trailing down my face. "I think your skin color and silver eyes are beautiful." he said, his deep, smooth, baritone voice washing over my senses and calming me until I practically forgot what I was crying about in the first place.
"Thanks. I'm Cancier. Like the zodiac sign, just with an added I."
"I'm Scorpio. Exactly like the zodiac sign."
"Wow, talk about a coincidence." I timidly brought my hand up to brush away a stray lock of one of my long, black curls. I always was a socially anxious person and when the person was staring at me like I was about to disappear at any second, it didn't exactly help the matter.
"So, let me guess. You're a Cancer."
"Let me guess, you're a Scorpio."
"What tipped you off?"
I laughed, casting my eyes down to the black Uggs warming my feet. "Only a Scorpio would chew out two old ladies like that." Scorpio smirked. "If they're young enough to talk the talk, they're young enough to walk the walk."
"Yeah, you're definitely a Scorpio."
He smiled at me with those pillow-soft deep red lips and said, "Y'know you really shouldn't be sitting here in the lobby like this."
My smile disappears as I remember the reason for my being down here in the first place.
"Umm, my parents are sending me to boarding school. Axewell Academy, I think. I'm waiting on my cab to the airport to catch my flight. It should be here soon." I mumble, nervously running the skin on my arm, looking away into the sun-filled distance. I didn't want to see the look of pity on his face that I knew would be there. I didn't want to feel more pathetic than I already did.
"Wait, are you serious?" What I heard in Scorpio's voice wasn't pity. It was shock and skepticism.
I looked back at him, raising an eyebrow at the confused, skeptical look on my face.
"Yeah, why?"
It took a moment for him to answer and when he did, he said in a hollow voice, "Because my parents are sending me away to Axewell Academy too. I was about to call a cab."
