"Sometimes you meet a person and you just click - you're comfortable with them, and you don't have to pretend to be anyone or anything."
+++Elyse+++
"You didn't," I laugh as Drew tells me how he tripped while walking into homeroom on his first day of highschool.
Don't ask how we ended up in this conversation because I don't have a clue. After we decided to get some air the awkward tension lingering between us slowly but surely died away as we laughed.
"Unfortunately, yes, I did" his ears tinge pink "up until I came here, my friends wouldn't let me hear the end of it," as it happens to have turned out, Drew just moved here two years ago and goes to my old high school. I've discovered Drew to be a funny, laid back kind of guy, which makes me wonder why he's taking the time to get to know the girl who ordered 20 sugarcubes while wiping the tears off her tear-stained cheeks instead of being in the huge house and partying.
A comfortable silence falls upon us, my eyes fixed on the blades of grass before me glistening under the moonlight, a smile on my face.
"Hey Elyse?," I look into his hazel irises that are swirling with thought.
"hmm?,"
"How come I haven't met you until today?,"
"Oh, um... well," I have no reason to, but I feel guilty all of a sudden "I grew up here but I left for boarding school when I was fifteen." I explain almost sheepishly returning my gaze to the glistening grass.
"Oh, cool," I inwardly thank him for not prying any further. The moonlight is casting down on Drew's soft yet rigid features giving his skin a milky glow.
I get up brushing the dirt of my clothes and take a step backwards facing him "Well I guess I shou-" I slip on a discarded bottle of some kind and fall onto the damp grass. Don't mind me, I'll just be here tripping on my own bad luck.
"Well that's embarrassing," I reach for Drew's outstretched arm to find him trying his best not to laugh. It's a good thing it's gotten dark out because I was almost positive my face resembled a tomato."Are you always this clumsy?" he asks with an amused smirk, his eyes hold all the laughter he isn't letting escape.
"If I say yes, will you forget about it?" I say with a playful smile spread across my face, standing an arm's length in front of him.
"I'm not making any promises, Lyse." My breath hitches in my throat at hearing him use my nickname. I'm supposed to be mad after the whole thing with Riley but after spending a couple hours with Drew I can't even remember why I was so upset in the first place. Tonight has been one of the best times of my teenage life. Or something like that at least. My brain wasn't functioning as usual, neither was my heart for that matter.
"Yeah well I should probably be heading home,"
"So soon?" His grey beanie is placed perfectly on his stark black hair. Why couldn't I look that good in beanies? They always look misshapen on my head.
"It's like past midnight, Drew." I said looking down at my watch.
"Can I drive you home?" he questions cheekily.
"No it's fine, I'll walk?," and I thought I couldn't get anymore awkward.
"Come on, let's go," he states stubbornly grabbing my wrist and practically dragging me toward his car "I was only asking to be a gentleman,"
"And how is that working out for you?" I say now willingly trailing behind him toward a car parked down the sidewalk. What's the worst thing that could happen?
"I am not letting you walk home alone in the dark," Drew chuckles as he opens the passengers door for me to get in.
As he drives I lean my head against the window, a veil of silence falling upon us. The streetlights flicker in a blur, I can barely make out the sound of the tires against the road. We drive for five minutes before I realise that we've stopped.
"Um, Drew, this isn't my house," I say turning in my seat to see him smirking playfully but his eyes held a certain amount of thoughtfulness.
"Just wait," he gets out if the car to open my door.
"You better not be plotting against me, buddy," I say pointing a finger at him, getting out of the car as well.He shakes his head and chuckles looking right at me. For what seems like an eternity our gazes lock. I stupidly ruin our moment looking to my right blushing furiously.
I follow Drew into what seems like a shop but it's too dark out to read the sign. A bell rings as he opens the door for me to go in.
And thats when the draft whirls the familiar scent that i've come to love in my direction.
A perfect mixture of scents, the warm aromas of cinnamon, vanilla and coffee seem to swirl around me.
The sound of coffee being grinded beings me out of my blissful daze. I look over to where the sound was coming from and am surprised to find Drew behind the counter.
Duh Elyse, he's a barista, why are you so surprised?
"Would you like a latte or an espresso?" my heart stops the second I realise what he's trying to do.
Why would he try to help me?
I manage to get my recently jelly-turned legs to the counter in front him and lean on it in an attempt to keep a calm facade.
"A latte please," I say with a smile deciding to just go with it for once in my life.
