•❅───✧❅✦❅✧───❅•The air is stiff and cold. Not that the air would be any different. It just can't be different. Every day the air seemed so heavy on the lungs of its carriers. No matter how many breaths one could take, the air never got any lighter. What happens if the air becomes too heavy for one to bear? Well, everyone knows that means death. If one dies from the lack of oxygen, it used to be called a tragedy. Many things could cause one to stop breathing entirely- Drowning, suffocation, blood clots, a collapsed lung. But up here, it was only one thing that ended the oxygen to enter lungs. It's if there is no more oxygen left in the air. Up here it is called breaches, or if someone is unlucky, getting floated and sadly, it's most common.
100 years ago, well 97 to be exact, a nuclear war broke out on the long loving planet called Earth. It has been inhabitable since. If it's inhabitable, then how are there people still alive? Well, before the entire human race was wiped out, some extremely lucky people were able to escape into outer space. Now, the rest of civilization sits in a floating metal tube in space, or as others would call it, The Ark. There are over 2,000 people living in this canteen. Yes, that is quite a lot of people. To be able to survive, the numbers are always calculated, which means floating innocents, and not being able to have a sibling. There are some perks however, everyone is the favorite child in their family.
Just like how there are many people, there are probably enough jobs on the ship to fit each person. Farmers, engineers, doctors, soldiers, teachers. Up here, we have it all. Unlike most people however, I, Sophia Williams, am not fond of what job I'm supposed to inherit from my family. It is because of my distaste that I am walking into the big, sleeping quarters- the biggest quarters. Who would take these quarters? None other than our Chancellor himself.
The metal underneath me clinks with every step I take in my worn out shoes. If the air seemed heavy before, then I have no words to describe how hard it is to breathe while staring my leader in his face. Dull colors of his clothes match with the rest of the old dirty metal around him, yet his clothes are nicer than most, indicating his rank. Heavy eyes fall down onto the silver table in front of him, the table being in the middle of the room. A makeshift chess board lay in front of him, along with a white cup filled with what I can assume is coffee. Upon hearing the door and my disrupting footsteps, he looks up at me out of acknowledgement. The guard behind me, which had me on my toes this entire walk through the door, finally closes the door behind me. It leaves just me, and the well-known Chancellor.
"Miss Williams. Please have a seat," he gestures to the chair in front of him.
Reluctantly, I sit down, letting the cold steel seep through my clothes. If it weren't for the countless years of feeling the chilling feeling of metal, I probably would have goosebumps,"Thank you for letting me have an audience, Chancellor Jaha."
"Anything for the daughter of Steve," Jaha smiles when mentioning his associate.
Steve Williams. Also known as my dad. He is well respected around the Ark. His humor, and overwhelming kindness to others may be one factor on why everyone knows his name, but truthfully, his job is most likely why he's familiar with almost everyone. Never, until the end of my days, will I live down the fact that my dad is the most embarrassing person in my life. Why? Because my dad is the Sex Ed teacher.
