The Party

Finn turned the doorknob and a brightly lit room appeared in front of me. I heard the voices of friendly chatter, but saw no one. His hand was still on my back as he led me in first.

I can’t do this.

I could feel my breathing start to get heavier. I have no clue why I was so nervous; I just couldn’t believe my first date with him was meeting his whole family.

I suppose he could hear my breathing thicken, because he laced his fingers through mine and placed his other hand on the back of mine. It was like a warm, strong, Finn hand-sandwich.

However, this was the first time he had held my hand. It felt nice, like our hands were two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle which were made to fit together.

I stared down at his hands and started smiling. He saw this and turned to me, making eye contact that made me feel weak. I was drawn into his green eyes. They were magical and alluring.

“Listen, Thea, I know this can be a lot to take in, but we’re just going to say ‘hi’ and head up to my room to chill, okay?”

“Sounds great,” I said with an involuntary sigh of relief.

He gave a little chuckle.

“I could tell you were still nervous.”

I thought of absolutely nothing to say to this, so I just looked forward and gripped his hand a little tighter.

Don’t start sweating. For the love of God, close your horrible hand pores.

We started walking and entered the kitchen. This house had looked more like a magazine with every step. Not only was the outside elegant, the inside was beautifully decorated to the point where I just wanted to take pictures of every room.

As he pulled me into the kitchen more, he took one hand off the top of mine, but kept the other one gracefully intertwined with mine.

Breathe.

“Finn!”

“Hey mate!”

“Oh Finny, hello!”

I didn’t know what to do when the ‘hello’s’ started, so I stood there with a polite smile, trying not to be awkward.

It wasn’t working.

“Hey everyone!” Finn said with a gracious wave.

Everybody went on with their small talk and a beautiful woman started to walk over to us.

“Finn, you said you would be on time,” she said with a waging finger.

“Mom, I am perfectly on time,” he stated while kissing her cheek.

This is his mother? This gorgeous woman? No way.

She then looked at me and threw her hands up before clasping them together.

“Ah! And you must be Thea! It’s lovely to meet you.”

“It’s quite nice to meet you, Mrs. Harries.”

“Goodness, call me Rebecca, please.”

“If you insist.”

Finn gave my hand a little squeeze to let me know I was doing an okay job.

“Finn must have forgotten to mention that you were American. That’s some accent! Where exactly are you from?”

“I’m from Ohio. A pretty small town, but nothing near as extraordinary as London!”
