Day 6
JOHN
On the other end of the line, I could hear Evan's voice through the static of my phone. "You said we'd go together," I reminded him, frustration creeping into my tone. I was currently riding in my rental car, heading towards our planned destination, but without Evan by my side.
"I'm sorry," Evan replied, his voice laced with amusement. "I didn't bother to wake you up earlier because you were sleeping so soundly."
I sighed, knowing he had a point. Last night, I had been so consumed with my writing that I hadn't noticed the time passing. Evan had been comfortably sleeping when I finally decided to turn in for the night. And now, here I was, alone as Francesco drove me towards my destination.
"Why are you so early?" I asked him, still unable to shake off my frustration.
"I just have something left to do, Princess," Evan explained. "And I didn't want it to get in the way of us, so I'm sorry."
I covered the phone mic with my hand and muttered to the driver, "Excuse me, Francesco, are we there yet?"
Francesco, a cheerful old Italian man, responded with a smile, "Yes sir! Just a few more minutes and we will be at the railway station."
I nodded, thanking him, then turned to my friend Evan and said, "We're almost there."
Evan, who had suggested that we take the train instead of driving, replied. "I'm glad you're coming along for this tour. The train ride is a great way to see the countryside."
I smiled, excited about the adventure that awaited me. Evan had planned this trip for days, showing me pictures and videos of the beautiful landscapes and charming towns we would visit. And now, I am finally on my way.
As we got closer to the railway station, I couldn't help but feel a bit nervous. I had never been on a train before and didn't know what to expect. But with Evan by my side, I knew I would be just fine.
"OK, then I'll just wait here until you arrive, and then I'll hang up," I said into the phone, my voice shaking a bit.
"All right, see you," Evan replied before abruptly cutting the line. He must have dropped the phone or something, I thought to myself as I put the phone in my pocket.
...
A few minutes later the car came to a stop, I practically jumped out of my seat and opened the car door, eager to start the next leg of my journey.
I stepped out onto the dusty ground and took a moment to bow slightly, looking back at Francesco through the passenger side window. He had been my driver for the past few days, shuttling me from one destination to another as I explored the beautiful countryside of Italy. I couldn't have asked for a better guide.
