Mary is a eight year old girl who lives in Home. She has red skin, a blue nose, and green hair put up in two thick braids. She wears an overall dress and has rainbow socks. Her parents work a lot, so she's left to entertain herself and depends on the adults to watch after her. Puppets or even concepts for her parents were never found and they didn't physically appear in any episode, they are only mentioned by Mary. This is believed to have been a cost-saving measure, only having to create one puppet to introduce a new character instead of having to make three. The adults all have vague memories of meeting her parents but wouldn't be able to give specifics of the meeting, making it almost impossible for any of them to have opinions on the parents besides indifference to outright disliking them for seemingly ignoring their daughter.

Mary has a condition known to her and the other characters as "Hyperkinetic reaction of childhood". What more modern viewers would know as ADHD.  she shows symptoms of forgetfulness, being easily distractible, passage of time processing issues, restlessness, and tunnel vision. Mary, being young, refers to it as her rain being "broken" and wishes she could be "normal".

She has several dolls and toys that make appearances, but her favorite is a lamb hand puppet named Cuddles. Cuddles and Mary typically communicate via gestures and head nods, though she will sometimes have him speak.

She loves having the other characters read to her. There are a few episodes where she's needed to stay with others overnight and comments that her favorite part of her bedtime routine is the bedtime story.

She tries her best not to lie, but if she thinks the truth will hurt someone's feelings, she will fib. This has gotten her into trouble with characters that value honesty, mostly Frank.

Mary is Eddie Dear's niece, though neither of them knew it when Mary first moved to Home. It was revealed in an episode six months after Mary joined the cast.
