Chapter 2 - Scroll
published: April 10 2023Alex sat on the hardwood floors of her kitchen, watching YouTube shorts. Scroll, scroll, scroll. An endless loop of scrolling.
"I gathered 1444 random subscribers and made them stay in a circle..." Mr. Beast's voice came through the iPad's speakers. Alex scrolled past.
"Alex, don't you think it's time to take a break from YouTube?" her mother's worried voice called. "It's been an hour already!"
She sighed. "No, Mom, I still need to watch this one short! I'll be there in a second!"
Alex never came for dinner. A second was a meaningless unit of time to her, it could be as long as an hour yet as short as a millisecond. She lay there, on the couch, scrolling mindlessly.
Her eyes bore into the screen, idling in one position. All night long, her eyes turned redder and redder, and yet, she still scrolled on, her eyes open wide.
She didn't care about time. She didn't care about her mental health. She didn't care about herself. All she did was scroll on and on.
On and on.
On and on.
