I heard Demola come back and there was nothing I wanted more than to see the look on his face when he sees his girlfriend and me standing in the same room. However, I refrained. There was nothing to be gained from that interaction, instead I'd just be setting myself up.Their voices traveled from downstairs but I couldn't hear what they were saying through my slightly opened door. I'd propped it open so I could eavesdrop. After a few minutes, they went quiet downstairs. Had Adunni left? Did Demola go with her?
Sighing, I stood to go shut the door, already pissed at myself for being so invested. It's not like we were in a relationship or anything, it was just sex. He lied to me, and the only thing I could do about it was to call things off and just avoid him. No way would I get down with a taken man, especially not after growing up in the house I did.
Just as I reached out to push the door, a hand moved, halting me and holding the door open. I already knew it was him, and there was nothing I could do to conceal the fact that I'd been listening in on their conversation. I gritted my teeth, turning to walk further into my room. Demola invited himself in and shut the door behind him. My stomach dipped and I felt my body tighten and release as his delicious smell hit me.
He's a cheater! Stop letting him affect you. The scolding I was giving myself internally didn't really help as Demola grinned at me.
"What do you want?" I snapped, irritated that he would even look at me like that. This man lied to me and to his girlfriend.
"Ah. Calm down nau. What's up with the attitude?"
"Attitude? What kind of stupid question is that? What did you expect when you came in here? That I'd just spread my legs for you, no questions asked?"
"As much as I love that visual—" he winked "—I would like to understand what's going on?"
"Has your girlfriend gone?" I frowned, my gaze harsh and unyielding.
"Girlfriend?" The bastard had the nerve to look confused, and then his shoulders began to shake as he laughed. "Girlfriend," he said in between laughs.
I threw him a death glare, the fiercest I could muster. "This is funny to you? Get out of my room please." I flung my hand towards the door.
"Girl chill." He walked forward, placing his hands on my waist and drawing me closer to him.
"Get your hands off me you bastard!" I slapped his hands away and then took a few steps back for good measure. "Can you go?"
"I don't understand what's happening. You're asking me to leave because of Dunni?"
He called her 'Dunni', that showed how close they were that they were on nickname levels. Demi and Dunni. The names went well together, the type that would look damn cute on a wedding invitation card, and I felt sick as I remembered that I've been thrust in their middle.
"You're a liar and a cheat, that's why I'm asking you to leave. You lied to me and then you've been lying to your girlfriend so you can cheat on her with me. You make me sick," I spat.
Demi's brows drew together and his lips flattened into a thin line, the small smile he'd been wearing finally falling away. "I didn't lie or cheat."
"Can you hear yourself?" I let out a wild laugh, already feeling my skin crawl. Was he really going to try and explain this situation away? "You know what? It doesn't matter because I'm done with whatever rubbish this was. My only condition was exclusivity and since you've broken that, I don't think there's anything left between you and I."
"Can you just let me talk before you start judging me? I don't deserve the look you're giving me."
I sneered in response. He was not about to tell me how to respond to his foolery.
"Adunni is not my girlfriend. She's just a friend. That means I didn't lie to or cheat on anybody."
"You're lying. NK clearly said Adunni was your girlfriend. I heard her."
Demola shook his head. "NK always says that but she knows I'm not dating Adunni. We attend the same church and I know she wants us to be more but we're not together. I promise."
Could he be saying the truth? Was it possible that they were just friends? An image of the tall, beautiful woman came to my mind. She was not the type of female people were just friends with. Demola was trying to sweet talk me back into his bed, I was sure of it.
"Please sit down." He gestured to the bed, pulling out his phone and then sitting. "I asked her to leave because I've warned her several times not to show up unannounced. If she was my girl, there's no way I'd just dismiss her like that."
I finally took a seat, keeping a good few inches between us and I told myself I wasn't sitting because he asked me. No, I was sitting because this was my room and I could seat whenever and wherever I wanted. Demola's eyes were on me and I tried my best to not meet it. I knew if I looked up at those warm browns, I'd be trapped and would fall for his cleverly spun lies.
His phone vibrated and he looked away. I was made aware that he answered a call when he set it on speaker phone and dropped the phone in the space between two of us. I looked at the screen, seeing her name as Adunni started talking.
"Demi I'm sorry. I know that you don't like me just randomly dropping by, but it's been weeks. You kept ignoring my invitations to hang out so I just wanted to check on you."
"It's fine," Demola said. "Hope you got home safe?"
"Yes. I just did. Say you've forgiven me," Adunni pleaded.
"I have, but don't try this again. Apart from the fact that it's rude, you're giving people the wrong idea about us."
"People? Your Aunt NK knows we're not together. Do you mean her? That Igbo girl?"
I bit my lips to force the words back. I was so close to cursing this woman out, but it was not my fight. She didn't even know I was listening to their conversation.
"Dunni, just don't show up unannounced. We'll hang next week if I'm free. I'm doing something important now, so later." He hung up before she could say anything else.
Something important. I was something important. I looked up at him, seeing the familiar small smile already playing on his lips.
"Do you believe me now?" he queried, one brow raised.
Considering that I just heard from the source that they were not in a relationship, I believed him. However, I would not apologize for today. I didn't do anything wrong as far as I was concerned. The situation called for it and I acted based on what I had seen.
"Shut up and kiss me," I growled, throwing my arms around him and pressing my lips to his.
Demola let out a groan as he kissed me back, dragging me towards him so I was now straddling him. "You owe me an apology," he said, drawing back so he could talk.
"Shut up," I growled again.
He chuckled before fusing his lips back to mine and kissing me deeply, his hands squeezing my waist tight. Later, I'd process and evaluate the tiny joy in my heart that Demola was single. Later, I'd ask myself why I was like this with him and just what was happening. All that would be done much later. Right now, I was content to be in the moment with Demola, letting his mouth and body seduce me.
