For this writing assignment, we were to pick one of our favorite quotes and go into depth about that it means. I also made it into a painting. :)
'Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny." -C.S. Lewis
Life has it's trials. No human can go through life without experiencing obstacles that seem to weigh them down. But, there is a decision that everyone has to make; whether to give up and feel sorry for themselves, or take the difficult situation and become stronger because of it. Often times hardships are perceived as completely bad situations that only bring pain and suffering, but that isn't always the case. Hardships can bring the growth of the mind and heart, build character, help discover oneself, and change not only oneself, but also that of the world.
Its all about perspective. Hardships may bring ruin and anguish to a person or a family, but if one stays optimistic and looks toward the bright side of the situation, the whole world can be transformed. There are opportunities in every struggle; to learn something and become humble in the midst of the challenge. It is easy to wish to give up when faced with a difficult situation that seems impossible, but without any hardships, we do not grow. If we are never challenged, then we stay in one place and never grasp the opportunity to grow from where we stand. What is the point of life if we never leave behind our old selves and transform into something new and better?
People who live with continuous trials tend to grow up faster and become more mature. Virtues, such as courage and wisdom, that usually come with time and growing older are acquired more rapidly by these people. Those who go through tough situations are likely to be inspired and passionate about certain issues rather than becoming indifferent. The big question is how they will choose to handle and cope with their troubles. Some people choose to become stronger and learn from their experiences and then become role models for others, while other people become angry, bitter, or addicted to cope with their pain.
Once we are outside of our comfort zones is when we have new experiences and are most open to changing ourselves. Change can be scary, but if we never allow ourselves to change on the inside, what is the point of living. Life would be empty and we would find ourselves stuck at the same corner of the world for the rest of our lives; too afraid to take a step towards the other side of the street. But that change is always worth it, even if sometimes their destiny doesn't succeed, small bits of change could reach out to someone's heart and that is successful nonetheless.
Changing the world, growing up, and building character all can result from difficult situations. Hardships aren't always going to be taking, but they can be giving if we are willing to open ourselves to the opportunity of change. Once we are able to grow from our former selves, the desire to change ordinary people and the world becomes our true destiny. The only question is whether we are willing to take up the challenge and create an extraordinary destiny for ourselves.
