For this project, we were to write a story about the world ending and how humanity would survive. It basically had to consist of our own ways of finding a new planet, creating a new society, and surviving on the new planet. However, I had a very intricate and cleverly thought out story that I was originally going to write, but because I procrastinate so much during the school year, writing this was last minute and I shortened it up to a simpler standard. I do plan to rewrite my original idea and post it because I think it is just too juicy to never let come alive. Hope you enjoy!
The crisp air chills my lungs as I take a deep and relaxed breath. My eyes flutter open once again as I let it escape back through my lips. The air here is so perfect. It is rich with energy and returns the life back to the solemn faces of our people. I still give my thanks to those who were able to give me this sort of relief. Even though it was several years ago, I still clearly remember what it felt like to be stuck in the cramped space ship for twenty-six days. The air there was thin and limited and it was so silent on the ship as no one dared to utter a single word for each breath used up what little air we had in supply. However, we never have to worry about that sort of problem anymore. We are safe now.
The whole reason for needing to spend twenty-six days confined in a space ship was because three years ago, our world was coming to an end. It all started dating back thirty-three years ago when the signs of a rogue black hole threatening to form at the center of our Earth appeared. However, it wasn't exactly a normal black hole, rather it behaved the same way our modified black holes did. Previous to this incident, several science organizations from different countries were in a race to experiment on the behaviors of black holes and each department worked to create a prototype that could be used as a weapon against their enemies. This prototype was made to be controllable and brief so that it would not consume everything in its path.
However, scientists were baffled and petrified to find that this particular black hole was to be massive and would easily consume the entire world. Questions were thrown around from all directions because no one knew how this could have happened. It made no sense that a black hole would suddenly appear at the center of a planet on its own, even if it did behave differently from a normal one. Unless, someone had purposefully placed it there. Flamboyant accusations were tossed out as the public tried to rationalize what was really going on. Most people pointed fingers at rival nations which caused much tension in the world. Also, some even blamed the science program my parents used to belonged to for being the one's to create such a notorious weapon,
But, it made no sense that any humans would purposefully put a black hole in the earth so that it would consume all of civilization, including themselves. In the end, even though there wasn't much evidence to prove this theory, scientists concluded that the black hole could have appeared due to all of the hasty experimenting with the uncontainable force. They claimed that the phenomenon materialized by accident and that it was a result of crude warfare.
On the other hand, most of the public was not taking the news of world destruction well. Violence and panic broke out immediately after the apocalypse was announced nationally. The threat of the end of humanity caused some people to go mad as they resulted to suicides and extreme violence. It was every man for himself for about the first month after the announcement. Luckily, it wasn't long until scientists were able to confirm that the black hole would not appear for another thirty years or so.
After the first rocky month, the leaders of each nation were able to get the panic-stricken citizens under control and from there and onward, incredible progress was made. The largest nations, putting aside their suspicions of one another in a momentary truce, came together to save all of humanity. These countries worked together for several years, generously sharing in their resources to build enough suitable space ships for billions of people to board. Advanced research programs worked diligently to find a planet that would be able to continue civilization and others labored over the possibility of modified portals, using the previous experiments on black holes, being our way to reach new dimensions in a short amount of time. The end of the world caused advances in technology that would have originally taken decades to figure out to happen in less than thirty years.
About twenty-five years after the end of the world was announced, my older brother, Alec entered the research force and quickly made a respectable name for himself. He was only fifteen then. Alec always took an incredible interest in where we were meant to live in the future, probably because we both grew up knowing that our current world would not be our true home. My brother was a genius and he worked hard to find the perfect planet for all of humanity. At this time, researchers had been bickering amongst one another for several years, trying to come to an agreement on what planet to choose. They had luckily narrowed it down to a few options, but it was my brother who proposed the idea of a different planet located in an unknown galaxy. His fellow researchers were baffled to find that Alec had picked humanity's perfect planet.
And so, the next five years were spent preparing for our departure. Everyone had drills planned out to know where to go when the time finally came to board the space ships. We constantly had our bags packed as we waited in anticipation for the sirens to roar through the sky. Most people were upset and fearful to be leaving Earth, but I was more excited to see our new world. I trusted the people to get me safely to a new civilization without harm.
Then, the day finally came. It caught everyone off guard because the scientist just the night before had said it would not be occurring for another few weeks. Nonetheless, we were ready when the time came. My family and I followed the drill guidelines as we had practiced quite often and so we drove to the nearest bunker holding our designated space ship. We had approximately seven hours until the black hole would appear.
Once we arrived at the bunker, I finally got a glimpse of the massive space ship which would carry me to safety. It was huge and quite a bit larger than most buildings. All of our most precious belongings were stuffed into three duffle bags, that was all we were allowed. We gave our bags to the loading staff and we got in line to board the ship. I said my good-byes to our planet, and as I token of remembrance, I stuffed a blade of grass into my pocket. Inside the ship, our family was shown to our designated rooms, which wasn't much larger than my own bedroom, and we just sat there in silence, waiting for our departure.
It wasn't until the pilot came onto the loud speaker several hours later and announced we would be leaving in the next few minutes that I finally broke out of my daze. I asked my mom if I could go to the common area and watch as we took off, in which she hesitantly agreed. My brother and I raced down the hallways as other kids and even grownups shoved their way to the handful of windows. Just then, the space ship rumbled beneath our feet and before we knew it, we were soaring upward in the sky, however, artificial gravity kept our feet firmly planted to the floor. I gripped onto the edge of one of the windows as the ground became more distant. The countdown for our world to break into destruction was on the wall, and I could tell everyone around me was getting nervous. We had ten minutes.
Most people had begun to head back to their rooms so they would not have to witness what was about to happen, but my brother and I stayed to watch as the whole Earth came into view and gradually became smaller. The overhead speaker was saying that our ship would be entering the portal soon to take us to our new galaxy. Outside the window, I could see thousands of other space ships identical to ours, coming into a formation. I tried to imagine where the people on those ships were from, and what they were doing at this hour. Our ship was silent, except for the erie ticking of the countdown clock and the nervous breathing of the few people left around us.
I gasped when I noticed that we were entering the portal as I could see the discolored edges on either sides of the ship. As I was observing the portal, the countdown clock suddenly let of a crisp *ding* and my gaze snapped to the distant earth before me. Nothing seemed to be happening at first, but then a hole appeared somewhere in the ocean and the rest of the earth followed it. I watched as my home up until now crumbled into the center until it was consumed by blackness. Others around me gasped and I saw tears glimmering on their cheeks, but I was not sad. I always knew that that planet was not home. I continued to watch on in curiosity as Earth turned to nothingness an a matter of heartbeats.
It wasn't until later that I realized that plenty of people had died as Earth was destroyed. The thousands of ships going through our particular portal were only for a few pf the great nations that had agreed to come together. Unfortunately, there were plenty of other nations that refused our offer to join the alliance as they wished to work alone. Others simply made space ships only for the wealthy of the country, and the rest were left on the planet. Once I had realized this several days later, I felt anguished that I had taken interest in world destruction while completely disregarding the lives lost in those few moments. I thought about those people a lot on our long journey to the new world and how their last minutes could have been spent. I felt that if I continued to think of them and not let their lives go unremembered, I might have been able to make up for my inconsiderate behavior.
It was those grueling days that caught all of us passengers off guard. Nobody had expected the air supply to run short so quickly. Also, along the way our ships had been bombarded with unexpected debris and turbulences which caused us to go off course a few times and cost us several hours of the trip. After only two weeks, the engineers on the ships began to become nervous about the air tanks. Nobody knew if there would be enough air for everyone to last until we arrived at our new home. The paranoia caused the passengers to go silent and made me think that every breath was drawing us closer to suffocation. That was the scariest time for me.
Another week passed and all anyone could do was lie around and not talk. The air was gradually getting thinner and my eyes watered and my lungs felt compressed. To keep myself occupied, I imagined the air in our new home to be so refreshing and even better than Earth's. But, it wasn't until the overhead speaker finally addressed our entire ship that I realized my dream was about to come true. Our new planet was within sight.
This time, I didn't rush to the windows because I wanted it to be a surprise. I had asked my brother several questions on what the world was like and where we would live. He told me that it had its similarities to Earth, but also some major differences. This new world had richer soil and so vegetation grew much taller and provided more recourses. The creatures that inhabited this planet were more likely to be herbivores, but the few carnivores were voracious but still feared humans.
Already, a few researchers had been living on this planet for some time, and now they sat waiting for civilizations arrival. My family stood shoulder to shoulder with me as we waited in anticipation for the doors to open. There were so many people around us that it made it even harder to breath, but as the doors finally parted and light seeped over my face, a rush of incredible air lifted my weighted lungs back into their rejuvenated selves. I smiled as I stepped out of the space ship for the first time and took in the world around me.
The grass at my feet was so long and thick, but it smelled so sweat and lively. The trees to our left towered high above any other trees I had ever seen, and a massive bird soared overhead. I still think that bird was there to greet us to our new homeland. I was ecstatic to continue to explore this unfamiliar world, but the best part was how relaxing the air was. I took several deep and drawn out breathes that sent chills down my spine. I could finally say that I was home.
Just as Alec had told me several months before, our section of civilization would live on the side of a mountain. This mountain was called Angel Mountain as if someone had magically lead us to this world and to safety. Angel Mountain was perfect because the researches said that there were enough minerals and resources inside the rock to be able to farm, find drinkable water, and even discover cures for notorious diseases.
Another exciting moment at this time was that the great nations we had worked together with for thirty years now decided that we all needed to stick together on our journey to repairing all of humanity. So, from there and onward, we were the united nations under the name, The Golden Society.
