"What were they saying again? That one in the blue top, they screeched like a pterodactyl in my ear, man!" Pom wheezed. "You're the ones who spread the virus! We shouldn't have let you live with us anyway, you waste of space. We'll reclaim our rightful lands," she had adopted a nasal voice to mock their attackers. "I'll purge you and save humanity, you demonspawn!" she stuck out her tongue and laughed.
"Mine started chanting some shlokas from the Gita," Dao shook his head. "It's literally the text where a god urges his friend to go to war against their family and friends, imagine the irony. Why did they think the same god would come to save them?"
"Mine just called me ugly," Rel rolled their eyes so far back into their skull that for a brief moment, Dao was afraid their eyes wouldn't roll back down, but they did alright. "Why won't you just stay dead?" in a false gruff voice, Rel too did a brief stint like Pom. Then their annoyance melted into a content smile on their face. "I don't know if it was just because I was starving, but they tasted so satisfyingly good after that," they ended with a loud smack of their lips.
To steer his attention away from those lips, Dao got busy with a little tear on his shirt. The fabric gave in when his human attacker tried to bury a stake in his heart, but it was just a snag. What caught his eye more than that was the way his clothes were smeared with blood in some places. Following his line of sight, the other two looked back down at their own clothes. In their ecstasy, Dao, Pom and Rel had been really messy while feeding.
"Ew, I got food in my hair," Pom tried to get the sticky red substance out of her hair as much as possible. Rel wiped their hands and mouth on the relatively cleaner clothes of one of the corpses. Dao followed their example.
He didn't want to think too hard about it, not yet. Dao had just had some really good food after a long time, he didn't want to ruin it for himself. So he ushered on his friends, "Let's keep moving, okay? Is the mob tracking us?" he asked Rel, since they had detected the threat first.
"I don't think so. You know how human senses suck, right? They've veered off in the wrong direction," Rel chirped.
"Wrong direction… you mean —"
"Towards the undead settlements. We just left them behind and are going in the opposite direction. They will circle back to mortal settlements at this rate and we'll get to areas with an undead majority."
"They're headed towards the house," Pom stared off into the distance. "Our flat —" she trailed off. "Don't they burn down shit when they're angry? Will they burn down our apartment building, too?"
How could Dao answer Pom when she looked so heartbroken? He only found refuge in the consolation that he had been able to provide her a home for so long.
"I think it'll be alright," Rel said confidently. "They will target the buildings that look haunted by human standards. Your apartment would probably look boringly human to them."
