The first day of camp had officially started. The group leaders all got up early, rushing to get ready before getting the dining hall ready for the children. They each walked down the gravel paths to get to the group cabins, each turning off at different points but still hearing eachothers footprints or sighs due to the warm weather.
It was around 11am when all the children had eaten in the big wooden cafeteria and made their way to the first activity, swim races. Two groups went head to head to win a movie night in their cabin, the groups chosen were the yellow group and the red group. Evie looked around, seeking the camp leader her group would go against and to her shock it was Ava, the blonde haired girl. Evie sighed but walked back to the cabins with her group and waited outside while they got their swimsuits on.
Half an hour later the swim race was in full swing. The sounds of children cheering and laughing filled the air, Evie looked around, it was precious. The children laughing and smiling, supporting each other made her feel like the word isn't so bad. She was walking along the walkway down the middle of the lake, smiling at the children and high-fiving those who had already finished the race. Then she stood up, stretching her legs and watching out to the sparkling water, splashing everywhere.
All of a sudden she felt someone bash into her arm at some force, pushing her backwards making her nearly stumble over. After quickly regaining her balance she turned around to see Ava. "What was that for?" Evie asked in a stern but quiet voice.
"Your team is going to lose" Ava snapped back
Stunned at how petty Ava's comment was, Evie walked off looking her up and down in the process under the sunglasses. As Evie walked off she saw one of the other camp leaders who had been the lifeguard for the swim race. She watched her make her way down the long stairs to the chair, "hey" said Evie, greeting the curly haired girl making her way down.
"Oh hey!" Replied the girl excitedly.
"It's Sophie isn't it?" She replied, not wanting to get her name wrong.
"Yes and yours is Evie right" she said in her strong American accent.
"Hey has Ava said anything about me? She just pushed past me and always gives me funny looks. Do you think I've done something wrong?" Evie said desperately. It's too soon to be making enemies, and she has the spend the whole summer here.
"What!! Ava is the sweetest girl I've met in here, maybe she's getting too into the camp spirit. I can talk to her about i-"
Before she could finish Evie cut her off "no no don't worry I'm sure she'll come around" she reassured her, not wanting to start drama already.Evie's team ended up winning, she smirked at Ava when it was announced who took one look and walked away. She couldn't help but feeling embarrassed for Ava and the comment she made earlier but shook it off on the walk to the cabins. It was dark out now, she could hear the crickets in the bushes and the still water of the lake moving in gentle waves. She walked back to the childrens cabin to turn the film off, due to them winning the race they could pick a film to watch and the majority voted on the greatest showman. She walked through the wooden door after gently knocking and assuring the children it was only her. As she walked, trying to avoid the creaky floorboards she noticed the room was mostly dark. All of the children had fallen asleep, they were probably tired from their busy day so Evie crept out after switching the film off and wandered back outside.
As she was walking out she noticed a singly light on at the end of the dock, she walked towards it and sat down at the end, looking around first to check there was nobody around. She dangled her legs off the side, the water nearly touching her trainers but she couldn't help but feel content. She looked out to the water, the light creating a golden shadow on the almost green water below, she looked out at the boats tied up gently bobbing in the water. It was peaceful.
Evie had been sat here for a while before she felt like she was being watched, she felt eerie especially being sat alone near the woods. She got up, looking into the distance where her group cabin was and noticed the door was slightly open however she was sure she'd closed it on the way out. Evie dismissed the eerie feeling and told herself she probably just left it open, unless maybe she really was being watched?
