-Flashback-

I woke up in a very bright room, my eyes squinting when I finally opened my eyes.

Why was I in the hospital?

As I was trying to remember what happened a nurse walked in, when she saw that I was awake she called for a doctor and came fully into the room.

"Dillon, how're you feeling?" She asked as she checked the machine.

"Why am I here?" I asked, looking around.

The room was still bright and it was making my eyes hurt. Feeling uncomfortable, I tried to stretch my legs and winced when I felt a sharp pain coming from my left leg.

Looking down I noticed a wrap around my leg, looking up shocked I asked the nurse, "what happened?"

"You do not remember?" She asked, looking concerned and jotting some notes down on her clipboard. I shook my head. "What's the last thing you remember?" She asked as the doctor came in.

"Ahh Dillon, you're finally awake." The doctor said, smiling at me.

"What happened?" I repeated my question. The doctor looked over at the nurse who just shrugged.

"Dillon, you were shot in the leg." He said, standing by the hospital bed I was laying in.

"Shot?" I asked, confused.

"Yeah, shot." The doctor confirmed. The nurse was now changing my bandages and once I saw the actual wound, everything came to me.

My parents.

Acid.

Cocaine.

Alcohol.

Knife.

Gun.

Shot.

"Where are my parents?" I asked, trying to sit up and wincing when I felt that same pain going through my leg.

"Be careful, honey." The nurse said as she finished wrapping the wound. I looked up at the doctor.

"We have some bad news Dillon," the doctor started and I felt a pain in my heart.

What happened to my parents?

"Your mom passed before the ambulance could get her here due to an overdose." The doctor said, looking at me sadly. "Your dad on the other hand is in jail."

What?

"There is a police officer wanting to talk to you." He said, and just as he finished that sentence, a police officer came in.

"Dillon, how are you today?" The police officer asked, sitting down in one of the waiting chairs, the doctor and nurse leaving the room.

"I am okay." I muttered, still confused on what is all going on.

"As you are probably aware, your dad is in jail." The officer said, "he's in there for multiple charges."

"What?" I asked shocked.

I should not really be shocked, but seeing as I have lived thirteen years dealing with their antics. I never would have thought that it would end up this way.

"We've contacted Child Protective Services," he said, "the only family we could find is your father's sister Rita."

Who's Rita? I have never met any of my parent's family.

"Rita agreed to adopt you," the officer said, looking down at his clipboard. "She should be here any minute." Standing up, he stood by the door. "Feel better!" He added before leaving the room.

What in the world?

I was stuck in my thoughts as there was a knock on the door and the door opened. The police officer and doctor from earlier and a new person walking in.

"Dillon, this is your Aunt Rita." The officer said, pointing to the new lady that was just staring at me.

"Hello." I greeted, to which she just scowled.

"You look just like your mother." She said, rolling her eyes and facing the police officer. "Alright, when can I take the girl home?" She asked.

"That is something you and the doctor will have to discuss." The officer said, looking at her. "Alright, well since you've already filled the paperwork out, I'll be gone." The officer said, "feel better." He said again as he walked out of the room.

"So?" Aunt Rita asked the doctor as she crossed her arms. "I do not have all day to wait around here, I have a job to go to." She said, looking at her watch.

"As soon as we get the drip lines off of her, she's free to go." The doctor said as the nurse walked in.

The nurse quickly got all the wires off me and put the stuff in the trash that was needed to go.

"Alright, let me go grab a wheelchair for you honey." The nurse said about to walk out of the room.

"She doesn't need a wheelchair." Aunt Rita said, rolling her eyes. "Dillon can walk."

"It is protocol for her to be wheeled out in a wheelchair," the nurse replied looking at my aunt weirdly.

"That's unnecessary." My aunt replied, rolling her eyes. "I do not have time for that."

"Sorry ma'am, it is protocol." The doctor said as the nurse walked out and grabbed a wheelchair and coming back a few seconds later.

"Alright honey," the nurse said wheeling the wheelchair up to my bed and helping me out of bed and into the chair.

The ride down to the first floor was very quiet. The nurse pushed my chair to the doors and helped me out of it. "Are you okay?" She asked, I nodded. "Alright." She said and walked back in the building.

"Come on Dillon, we do not have all day." Aunt Rita said already walking away. Doing my best to catch up to her, I was limping badly. We reached her car and before I could even shut the door properly, she was already driving out of the parking spot and out of the lot.

The ride to her house was quick, it seemed like it only took about five minutes. Reaching her house, she pulled in and got out without a word.

Getting out of the car, I followed behind her into the house.

"Your room is this way," she muttered, walking through a door to a garage and to another room. Opening the door, she just shoved me into the room. "You're staying in here."

Stumbling into the room a bit more, I saw that there was a mattress on the floor with a small blanket on it, a broken dresser, and there was a bathroom attached to the room as well.

"I have a few rules," my aunt started, "you will not bother me, you will do as I say, you have to ask to eat, and you're not eating any of my good food. I have granola bars if I decide you can eat."

"You will make my food when I am hungry, you'll be doing the cleaning and anything else I tell you." She finished and looked at me. "Understand?" She asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Yes ma'am." I muttered.

"Good." She said, "now, stay in here for the rest of the night."

And she left.
