Chapter 1
The Beginning
The grip of her hand tightened and then loosened. His head buried into the off-white sheets; he could feel every crease fitting perfectly into each groove of his face. Although he knew Bo's life was going to be cut short the shocking sensation still shot through his body, his heart dropping into the floor, it left a dent in the cold empty tile.
He took a deep breath in; the oxygen filled his lungs. He wished he could go with her. Why couldn't this be his last breath too? Why couldn't he have switched places with her? Why? Why?
He slowly lifted his head out of her grave. The sound of the heart monitor still piercing his ears. He sighed and went to turn the monitor off. He slid his hands into his pockets and with one slow pivot he turned to face the wall. He let out another sigh. The cold gray wall consumed him. Decades passed.
Not a single tear had escaped.
Nothing could prepare him for this moment. Nothing. He walked toward her bed. It felt like miles. Each step filled him up with despondency. A leek had sprung in his heart, any sense of hope he had begun to pour onto the floor. Would he ever get it back? He held her small head in his hands. He placed his head to hers then his chest. Their hearts were nearly touching. She was still warm. She was practically microscopic compared to him. He could feel the memories of her begin to slip through his fingers, however he closed them. He could never forget her. He ran his hand across her soft hairless head, the medicine that was supposed to keep her here, took her away. He had watched parts of her slowly drift into the nothingness of the afterlife. She was the last thing he had left.
Everyone was gone. Everyone. He. Was. Alone.
Selfishly he began to think. Was this worth it? Should he have gone with everyone else? Now he would die alone.
He went his whole life never having anything for himself, everything whether it be love, attention, money, emotional presence went to his sister. How could he be angry with that? She was sick after all. But now, with one last breath he had the entire world to himself.
The world's eyes seemed to sag in sorrow, Earth, sick just like Bo.
Now comes the question. What to do with the body?
He walked quietly over to her as if not to wake her. The bunny he'd given her for her 6th birthday (her last birthday) slept silently cradled in her arm that now lay dormant by her side. He lifted her arm and removed it. She had named it Thumper. He replaced her arm exactly where it was.
The boy grabbed a white sheet that sat quietly in the corner. He gently draped it over his sister's resting body. Tucking each side underneath being careful because she was delicate.
He walked down the empty hospital halls; they were so quiet it was loud. He yearned so desperately to hear the alarms, wheels rolling, the sad and happy chatter that now ceased to exist. He could see his reflection in the swampy windows, still not one tear had been shed. Soon he found himself outside. He looked around and saw a shovel lying in an abandoned pick-up truck. He felt a level of empathy with that truck.
"I'm sorry," he said. He hopped into the truck, trying his best to be respectful. He grabbed the shovel.
"I'm only borrowing, I promise to return it." He looked around, not a single person or voice in sight. He remembered. He was alone now.
