"Vampires are real," I stated. I figured that the more I said it out loud, the easier it would be to believe it.
I was pacing next to the table that I had woken up on. Esme and Carlisle hadn't moved an inch after they had told me all of the rules and regulations that came with being a vampire. I guess they were letting it sink it.
"So, let me get this straight. If the vampire community were a country, the Volturi would be the rulers. I can't tell any human what I am because then they'll come for me, but it's really hard because when it's a sunny day, like today, I freaking sparkle," I rambled. "Not to mention the fact that I have to drink blood from a human, which I used to be, to stay strong, but I have been brought into a family who doesn't want to kill humans and opts for the more 'vegetarian' route of killing innocent animals. In conclusion to that, I'm totally screwed because I won't kill a human, but I also used to be a vegan so I won't kill and animal either!"
Esme looked a little concerned and Carlisle raised an eyebrow, intrigued by my little tantrum. I huffed and sat on the table.
"Sweetheart, I know that this is hard for you, but I promise that it will get better as you adjust," Esme soothed.
I looked at her. There was no way I could ever be mad at her. She reminded me of my mother, who was the most peaceful and kind woman I'd ever known.
"I believe you. I do. I just wasn't prepared for something like this. I wish that you would have given me an option before choosing to take me and make me one of you," I said sadly, looking down at my hands.
"You think that we took you?" Carlisle asked.
I looked up at him and nodded, a little confused at his question.
"Well, yeah. The last thing I remember is driving to my best friend's house," I said.
He and Esme shared a look and I stood up, crossing my arms.
"What's going on?" I asked.
"Violette," Carlisle started. "The reason why we changed you was to save your life. It was raining hard outside when you left your home and you crashed into a pole. You were trying not to hit a stray dog crossing the street."
As he spoke, muddy images of the accident filled my sight. The rain made it hard for me to see and when the Labrador ran out in front of me, I swerved to the left, thinking that I would drive onto more of the road. Instead, I smashed into the hard wood of an electricity pole. Darkness engulfed me after that and soon after, the fire began to burn inside my body.
Yes, he had saved me, but was life really worth living when I couldn't see my family anymore? I would no longer be able to hang out with my best friend without wanting to rip her throat out. I could never hug my little sister again without holding my breath for fear that she would be terrified of me after seeing what I really was.
I looked at Carlisle with a mixture of gratitude and disgust. He began to speak, but I shook my head and walked over to the open window, looking outside. A smile tugged at the corners of my mouth as I took in the calming sight of nature. I didn't know where I was, but the view was breath taking. The sky was beginning to turn to a marvelous mixture of pink and orange as the sun descended behind the mountains. The green of the trees began to darken as nighttime came upon us and the smell of fresh flowers tickled my nose. The melody of a babbling brook and rustling leaves pleasured my ears and I closed my eyes to focus on it.
As a human, I had always lived in the city. Seattle had been my latest home and I rarely saw a tree there. I was a tree hugger at heart, so it was comforting to know that my new home was surrounded my life and nature.
With my mind and soul at ease, I turned back towards Carlisle and Esme.
"Thank you for saving me. You did what you thought was best for me and I honestly couldn't fathom how grateful I will be once I've adjusted to this second chance at life," I said to them. It was true. I was being given a second chance and I was going to live it to the fullest, especially now that I knew nothing but another vampire could hurt me.
Carlisle nodded, a soft smile on his lips, and Esme said, "It was the right thing to do, dear, and I know that we all will be here to help you adjust if you need it."
"We all?"
"Yes. We have yet to introduce you to the rest of our family," Carlisle said, taking a step towards me and offering me his arm.
I took it and, with Esme leading, he guided out of the room and into a large room.
This room wasn't as empty as the one I had woken in, but it was just as open. There were two deep grey couches facing each other with a purple fur rug in the middle. On top of the rug was a perfectly placed glass coffee table adorned with a few magazines and a white, ceramic vase filled with a bouquet of white carnations. In one corner, there was a black leather couch with a stand-alone lamp next it and instead of a TV next to the couches, there was a large white bookshelf filled with various books. The walls were a soft grey and the floor was dark wood.
It looked like a page from an interior design magazine, except for some reason, there were models sitting and standing in various positions all over the room. As a human, I would feel completely out of place with all of these beautiful people, but after seeing what I had looked like in the mirror, I knew that I could stand tall and no one could take me down.
"Violette, this is my family."
