Jungkook spent the next few days flying all over the country whenever he received the smallest of leads regarding the identity of the person who had shot Min-woo.

He had just returned from one such trip and had fallen into an exhausted sleep in the office chair at the Kim Mansion when Tae-hyung woke him up.

“Jungkook.”

Opening his groggy eyes, Jungkook saw the grim look on Tae-hyung’s face.

“What happened?”

“Kang Yeol passed away last night.” Kang Yeri’s grandfather had passed away.

“Give me ten minutes, I’ll join you,” Jungkook told Tae-hyung.

Tae-hyung nodded. “Are you okay?” his older brother asked.

No. I’m not okay. I want the woman I love to love me back and want me in her life.

Jungkook knew his thoughts sounded pathetic in his own mind, so he didn’t voice them out to his brother. “I’m fine,” he said instead.

Two hours later, Jungkook, Tae-hyung, and Y/n were at the funeral held at the Kang Mansion.

Kang Mimo was wailing loudly on her father’s body.

Everyone stood in grim silence.

For the first time, the feud was put aside. The Kangs, the Kims and the Lee family were present to pay their respects to the family head.

After Jungkook paid his respect, his eyes searched for Kang Yeri. He finally found her standing quietly in a corner with a somber look on her face. Jungkook knew Yeri was mourning because he knew she was quite attached to her grandfather even though he couldn’t talk or communicate much.

He went towards her, wanting to offer comfort.

But he stopped midway when he saw Lee Je-hoon reaching her first and talking to her.

He was just about to turn away when her eyes met his. He saw the grief in her eyes and for a second, he even imagined her looking at him as though she needed his comfort. But then it was gone.

Her face smoothed and she looked away. She didn’t speak with Lee Je-hoon either, she just walked away.

Jungkook automatically followed her, wanting to offer his comfort, but he was stopped by Lee Je-hoon.

Both the men had a stare down. Even though Lee Je-hoon looked at him with a blank expression, he could feel the rage emitting from him.

“Stay away from her, Kim,” he warned. “Don’t think I’m blind or dumb not to notice what is happening right in front of my eyes.”

Jungkook didn’t bother replying him. His eyes continued to search for Kang Yeri.

“Stop sniffing after someone else’s woman. If anything, you should be wooing my sister who will soon become your wife.”

Jungkook’s eyes met Lee Je-hoon’s. “I haven’t agreed to the alliance yet,” Jungkook replied coolly.

“Maybe so. But whether or not you marry my sister, it doesn’t make any difference to Kang Yeri or me. We are going to marry soon. If you intervene… it’s not going to end well for you or your people.”

Jungkook wanted to punch the bastard in front of him. But out of respect for the occasion, he controlled himself.

“Don’t ever threaten my people again,” he warned. “What’s the matter, Lee? You have to warn off every man who wants to speak with your fiancée during her grandfather’s funeral? Seems kind of sad that you are that insecure.”

Lee Je-hoon’s jaw clenched, but he didn’t say anything.

Jungkook walked away before he ended up in a brawl. He had been itching to pummel that bastard for a while.

Even though Jungkook had the last word, the victory felt hollow. He still could not believe that Kang Yeri would prefer to tie herself to someone like Lee Je-hoon.

Feeling beaten, Jungkook walked out of the Kang Mansion, intending to return home when he received a message from the investigator. The lead turned out to be negative.

Disappointed, he was about to get down the last of the steps from the mansion when he saw an old man wearing priest’s robes trying to climb up the stairs using a walking stick.

“Let me help, Father,” said Jungkook before he guided the man through the mansion’s flight of steps. When they reached the top, the priest was out of breath. Jungkook decided to wait until the man could go in and get help from someone else.

“Thank you, my son,” said the priest. Then he sighed. “I never thought I’d outlive even Kang Yeol. He was quite a man. Always so tolerant and generous. Quite tragic what happened with him and most of his family.”

Jungkook nodded politely.

“His sons, Kang Shin-il and Kang Yeong-min, were equally tolerant, too. But unfortunately, once they were killed in a tragic accident, the tolerance within the provinces became very low. Most of our missionaries left within a few days.”

Something nagged within Jungkook. “Father, do you recall anyone who wasn’t a missionary, but had left at that time?”

The priest smiled. “A few of them, yes. Some of them call me from time to time and check up on me.”

Jungkook took out his phone and showed him Min-woo’s picture. It was a picture from nearly twenty-five years ago, but it was all they had.

“Do you recall seeing this man leaving along with the missionaries?”

The priest squinted. “I’m not sure. My memory and eyes are getting weak,” he said.

Jungkook felt a crushing disappointment.

“But I’m sure Father Mathews might know whether or not that man joined the group as they left. He was quite young at that time.”

Mathews? It was the same last name Min-woo  ended up using. Was it a coincidence?

“What’s Father Mathews full name?” Jungkook asked. “Samuel Mathews.”

Jungkook felt a jolt. It cannot be that big of a coincidence.

“Where can I find Father Mathews?” he asked in an urgent tone.

“He’s traveling. He should be back in ten days.”

“Can you give me his contact details? It’s very important.”

The priest shook his head. “He mentioned he could not be contacted in that remote place.”

“I see. Can I still get his details from you later this evening?”

“Sure, my boy. My doors are always open for anyone who needs my help.”

Jungkook summoned one of his men to take the priest inside while he went towards his car.

It was a long shot, but he somehow had a hunch, and it made more sense that Min-woo  took help of someone within the provinces to help him escape.

Instead of only trying to find out who had tried to murder Min-woo, Jungkook also wanted to know the identity of who had helped Min-woo escape.
