It was late at night in a large field with one single house. The crickets chirped, the fireflies glowed, and the owls hoot. Inside, working on a new blanket was Wendy. She sat silently in her art room as she sewed together a new blanket for the living room. Her two children were asleep upstairs. Her husband was away on a hunting trip, so she was left to care for the house and kids. It was normally a quiet area, which is how Wendy and her husband liked it. Her two kids, Piper and Sarah, were dropped off at home by a friend's parent after school because the busses didn't go far enough to their house for the walk to be safe. After all, Piper was 11, and Sarah was 7. On that same night, it was quieter than usual. Piper and Sarah must have fallen asleep early. As it neared midnight, Wendy was about to go to bed herself when the doorbell rang.
Wendy went to go answer it, but no one was there. She shrugged it off as if she were just hearing things. As she started to make her way upstairs, their dogs started barking as if they saw something outside. "Zeke! Casey, stop it." She said, snapping her fingers to get their attention. The dogs just looked back at her and continued to bark. Zeke, the bigger dog, even started growling.
"Mommy?" Wendy turned around to see her daughters at the top of the stairs. Sarah was rubbing her eyes, and Piper yawned as she put her arm around Sarah. "Why are Zeke and Casey barking?"
"It's nothing, sweetheart, go back to bed." Wendy explained, smiling at her daughters. "Come on, Sarah. It's late." Piper said as she held out her hand in an attempt to lead Sarah back to their rooms. However, the doorbell rang again. They all looked at the door with confusion and fear. Wendy looked up at her girls. The expressions on their faces told her that she wasn't the only one hearing the doorbell. Wendy left to go get the rifle from the basement, left by her husband. Sarah hugged Piper in fear, who hugged her back, trying to comfort her. When Wendy came back, she held the rifle and slowly opened the door, but still, no one was there.
The dogs went rushing out the door, only to bark at nothing. Wendy brightened the porch light and still didn't see anything or anyone. She took the flashlight that her husband kept on the table next to the door and looked outside a little further than the dogs, approaching the large tree in their front yard. There was still no one in sight, and as far as Wendy could see, no one had climbed and hidden in the tree. Wendy slowly made her way inside with the dogs. She locked the front door and closed all the curtains downstairs. She ensured that all the other doors downstairs were locked, then made her way to her room as well as Piper and Sarah. They all fell asleep and didn't hear the doorbell or dogs bark again all night. When the family woke up the next morning, the whole thing started again. This time, it's happening in broad daylight. No one else is there.
