Chapter 5

It was the morning of October 1st, and the rain was coming down sideways, hitting the pavement with force. Cora had spent much of the last week preparing for her visit to Malfoy Manor.

She had no qualms about the actual inspection of the manor. Although she had some unanticipated anxiety about meeting Draco Malfoy. The words Gawain said to her had been playing back in head for weeks, about the Malfoy's respecting power. Not to mention his response, he had given clear directions not to apparate directly inside his home; not that she would have anyway.

Had people made a habit before of apparating directly into his home?

Cora had never put too much thought into her appearance but knew this visit called for a different approach. As she got ready in the morning, she made a thoughtful decision about how she dressed.

She made sure her attire was influential, regal even. She chose a pair of tight black pants with a fitted black and white turtleneck sweater. She paired it with an emerald-green cloak and white heels; a subtle nod to house Pukwudgie's colors.

Wizards in London primarily wore robes and cloaks. It was different than how American wizards dressed, who preferred 'muggle attire' usually paired with a cloak. Cora had frequently been thought to be a no-maj because of her attire. Wizards in London did not understand why she mostly wore plain clothing. They needed to travel more and be exposed to other cultures, she thought.

Cora didn't normally wear jewelry or makeup but this time she opted for yellow gold studded earrings, and a long pendant necklace. With a flick of her wand, the lightest makeup was set in place.

She exited her loft, walking to the end of the street. She cast a quick disillusionment charm to avoid any prying eyes. With that, Cora thought cleared her mind, focusing on her destination. 'Just outside Malfoy Manor' and turned on the spot.

In a flash and a pop, she apparated and reappeared between a sprawling estate and an enormous steel gate that stood around the perimeter of the home, although it appeared more for show than anything else.

Cora took in the sight of the home; the grounds were meticulously well kept. The hedges were trimmed and the brick siding on the home looked as though it hadn't aged, despite the manor being 1000's of years old. Expansive gardens and flower beds lined the edges of the home, filled with roses and wildflowers.

The gardens were exquisite looking. White, red, and yellow roses lined bush after bush along the side of the manor. They expanded to where Cora couldn't even see. There were pillars filled with fresh wildflowers and well kempt hedges lined a cobblestone path. Silver benches dotted the path. Cora was mesmerized, maybe the gardens were why Draco stayed. She'd never leave them if she lived here.

She wanted to explore the gardens. But thought it best to go in and introduce herself to Draco first before wandering about his property.

She tucked her wand away, just inside the left lapel of her cloak. She rapped on the front door. After what felt like minutes the door poured open at a painstaking pace. A low, dominant voice sounded off in the distance and spoke only one word.

"Come."

The instinctual twinge to grab her wand outweighed her judgement to enter the manor unarmed. She gripped her wand inside her cloak, her knuckles turning white. Cora stepped into the manor looking for the man who had spoken.

She knew that Draco lived alone, but had assumed that it was a servant who had ushered her in. Unbeknownst to her, it was Draco Malfoy himself. Staring at her, shrouded in shadows.
