do you think that I've forgotten...?

Every good story starts from the beginning.

As years went by, Shi Qingxuan couldn't help but feel the end of his godhood was cruel yet deserved. He had grown accustomed to the life of mortals. Although he did miss the fine wines and foods that were served to him in his beautiful palace with attendants and junior officials at the tips of his fingers, he knew that there was no point in mourning the inevitable.

His brother's misdoings eventually came back to take their karmic debt— or in their case, his dear elder brother's head.

But more than anything, more than the palaces and the food and even more than his late brother... he missed his best friend... if you could even still call him that after the betrayl that he had faced back at Blackwater's realm. Ming-Xiong— Earth Master, Ming Yi... but that wasn't correct either. His name was He Xuan. Xuan, just like Shi Qingxuan, how could he forget their matching names? It was the source of all their problems.

Then again it was also the source of his temporary happiness. When He Xuan was Ming Yi and would spend every second of the day, tolerating Shi Qingxuan and just keeping him happy... that was the best time of Shi Qingxuan's life. Their friendship was just fake, part of the plan to get revenge but it felt real to Shi Qingxuan and he would hold it dear.

But he could never forgive He Xuan for what he did to Shi Wudu, he had promised himself that from the moment he saw his brother's head get torn from his neck like a flower being plucked.

---

The same went for He Xuan, although he would never admit it, he had the same erroneous feelings that Shi Qingxuan was experiencing (neither of them knew, naturally and they would rather die than admit it to the other).

The friendship was supposed to be fake. He was just supposed to get close enough to Shi Qingxuan to be able to take his revenge. But the everloving Shi Qingxuan treated him to bountiful meal, vintage wines and paraded him through the heavenly capital, claiming to everyone they met;

"This is my dear friend, Earth Master Yi! I couldn't be closer to anyone else!"

His mistake, of course. He shouldn't have become close to the Wind Master in the first place... maybe he should've just lured them out to the island and done the deed there, of course, then the betrayl and satisfaction they felt wouldn't have been nearly as... rewarding.

Beneath all the relief, and the feeling of finally doing himself and his family justice. He couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt. The Wind Master didn't actually do anything to deserve that ending, the trauma from his brother's death or the revelation that he truly wasn't supposed to ascend might've been enough. There was no point in dwelling on the past though.

His mother always told him, even through the worst of disasters that the Vernacular Immortal had sent their way; "If you spend too much time on the past, you'll miss the future." And then his dear sister would add-in, without missing a beat;

"Yes, and you'll miss the chance to shape it."

He might not be able to change the past, but he could certainly change the future.

He would never regret what happened to Shi Wudu but he would be able to protect Shi Qingxuan— from a distance. He could never show his face to that wretched wind master again, they had destroyed each other whether they were conscious of it or not. He would only feel like a hypocrite if he showed up on Shi Qingxuan's doorstep and claimed he was there to save him from the life he had subjected him to.

"I wonder what Ming-Xiong gets up to now that he has taken his revenge and avenged his family."

"I wonder what the Wind Master does now without his godhood and brother..."
