The shockwave passing through the forest was tangible. Even through her hazy, lurching awareness, Kat felt it pass through her body in a rush. Pushing the air from her lungs as she lay, hands uselessly curling against the forest floor, her eyes heavy, her stomach turning, her head throbbing.

She felt it return too, pulling back that pulse of energy mere seconds later, not that her sluggish thoughts could comprehend it, but she felt it. Amidst the sensation of her breath passing over dry lips, the miniscule motions of leaves shuddering under those exhales, the debris of the forest pressed to her cheek, she felt it.

The screams she heard felt distant, foggy. The voices indistinguishable in their anguish. As though she were hearing them through water.

The light was shifting. Flashing. Behind closed eyelids it flickered in abstract patterns tinged with pink, red...

No.

A word. She heard a single word, roared above every clouded sensation, she heard a word.

No.

And then... Then it was quiet.
