Author's POV

A small village bustled with life. The busy roads, the chatter of people around—some were seated outside their shops playing chess, others engaged in conversation.

A few women stood on their balconies, watching the street, while others were in their kitchens preparing meals. Children played football in the street; it was afternoon, and everyone was busy with their routines.

Two girls turned onto the main street, carrying bags on their backs. One had a cheerful smile on her face, while the other looked a bit down.

After bidding each other goodbye, one took a turn to the right while the other continued walking ahead.

"Good afternoon, dear," came a voice, making her stop.

"Good afternoon, uncle. How are you?"

"Fine, fine. Coming from college?"

"Yes, today was our result."

"Oh! So, how was it? And what about Navya?"

"Uncle, I got the first position and Navya got third. That’s why she’s a bit sad."

"Third is not bad at all! But where is she?"

"I tried to explain that to her, but you know how she is. She went home—she thought you'd be there."

"Okay, I think I should head home then, maybe lighten up her mood. By the way, Nandini dear, congratulations on your success! Your mom will be so proud of you. You’re the first girl here to top the class. No doubt, we all are very proud of you," he said, making her smile.

"Thank you, uncle."

"Alright, now go home and surprise your mom," he said, and she nodded before leaving.

"Congratulations, Nandini dear!" another voice called out. She looked up and smiled.

"Thank you, Anupam Auntie. How are you?"

"Absolutely fine after hearing your result! I think you should teach my daughter a bit—she has no interest in studies."

"Sure, sure!" she replied with a chuckle.

Nandini's POV

I finally reached home. So many people congratulated me—but not the one I truly want it from.

I walked toward the kitchen, knowing she'd be there. Taking slow steps, I stood behind her and gently covered her eyes.

"Nandini! Where were you?" she asked immediately.

Why do I always forget that I’m her only child? No one else lives here, so of course she knows it's me. I withdrew my hands and made a fake annoyed face.

"I was gossiping with your friends outside."

"Okay, but today was your result, right?"

"Don’t ask about it, Mom. I'm already very sad."

"Why? What happened?"

"The result is bad, Mom... I... I failed in three subjects. Can you imagine?"

"What? How is that possible? You’re the brightest student in your college. I do—"

"You don’t believe me? See this!" I said, handing her the result sheet.

She looked carefully and smiled.

"You can never change, right?"

"Of course not! Now, congratulate me?" I said, and she pulled me into a tight hug.
