"so... you broke my favourite mug... and you're breaking up with me?"

the room was filled with an eerie silence, except for the sound of the rain tapping against the windowpane of y/n's apartment.

"okay. that," the girl pointed at the shattered mug on the floor. "wasn't on purpose... but yes... i think we should break up." she felt the palm of her hands start to get moist.

y/n stared at her, now, ex-girlfriend. the black girl blinked, then again, and again. heart beating incredibly fast, she could feel the pain in her chest start to intensify.

not being able to come up with a proper sentence, her lips only formed into a small pout. she stood there, tears threatening to fall down her face as she tried to hold herself together.

it finally happened...

"y/n... please, say something. anything?" her ex-girlfriend uncomfortably stood there with a forlorn look on her face, waiting for any type of answer.

at last, after what felt like an eternity, y/n spoke up.

"... it was inevitable." she muttered, her voice barely above a whisper as she felt the tears fall from her stinging eyes.

the blonde girl nodded in agreement, her expression resigning.

five years ago, if anyone ever told y/n she'd end up in this position, she wouldn't believe it. not even one bit.

with yelena, she had always thought they belonged together... childhood friends, high school sweethearts, first and last loves...

but as the time passed— no matter how much the young couple tried to ignore the problem— they knew that the strong and passionate love they had for each other wouldn't last forever.

they desperately tried to hang onto it, to whatever was left of it, but that love was slowly starting to dim... until nothing was left of it. time has turned the bloom to grey.

it was the right thing to do, the best decision... breaking up was only a question of who had the guts to do it first.

with scattered and shattered ceramic pieces in between them, they both stood there for a moment, lost in their own thoughts.

"i'm sorry i couldn't keep my promise— " yelena's voice broke at the sight of y/n crying. "— to spend the rest of my life with you." she finished.

the androgynous girl was about to take a step forward, but the dangerous mess and the numerous cardboard boxes made her halt.
