Chapter 9

I was falling again. Correction. We were falling. I could feel myself screaming as we fell faster and faster my braids whipping my face as I blindly tried to make Tsaheylu with the Ikran, the cold wind smacked my face and rushed past my ears drowning out any screams of terror I was making, I instinctively wrapped my legs tighter around the creatures large neck and strengthened my torso pushing forwards and swiping the hair out of my face so I could attempt to see the creatures ngim mikyun to make Tsaheylu with. I felt myself let out a cry of determination as I shoved my tswin into the Ikrans ngim mikyun watching as the tendrils curled around each other and the Tsaheylu was formed. What little breath I did have left me in a strangled gasp as I felt the Ikran become an extension of my own body, felt my arms extend into wide strong wings and my eyes became clear, sharp and focused. The best part was that we were still falling, but now I was able to experience it from two bodies.

"STOP! STOP FALLING! STOP IT FOR FUCKS SAKE!" I screamed over and over hugging the creature for dear life as it screeched and flopped about uselessly as we plummeted through the sky.

"COME ON! DO SOMETHING! OPEN YOUR WINGS!" I cried wrapping my arms tighter around its neck, the Ikran obeyed opening its wings wide, and we began to spin through the air tossed from wind current to wind current, my stomach rolled as my face was whipped with the harsh wind, and the creature screeched in fear as the ground which had been a distant speck moments ago drew closer.

"WE ARE GOING TO DIE! JUST FLAP YOUR WINGS AND FLY YOU STUPID CREATURE!" I screamed my voice breaking, at the last second the creature arched its back and flapped its powerful wings so that we were no longer hurtling towards the ground at an alarming speed, instead we were now aiming straight for a large floating rock island.

"DODGE IT! GO LEFT!" I cried instinctively wanting to shield my face with my hands but forcing myself to hold onto its thick neck, once against the creature obeyed banking left and away from the island into the clear empty sky.

"Can- Can we fly a little high please?" I asked weakly unsure of whether the creature would decide to close its wings and plummet from the sky with me on its back again. However, the Ikran let out a happy clicking sound and beat its wings in a rhythmic movement pulling us up steadily into the clear blue sky.

"Ok... now can we fly just straight...?" I asked timidly gasping in delight as it glided through the air. That was right! I had made Tsaheylu with the Ikran, I didn't need to scream or shout, I could literally communicate with the Ikran with just my thoughts, and here I had been falling from the sky and screaming at the poor creature. Yikes.

I took a deep breath feeling the Ikran do the same, I smiled softly accepting that I had almost just died, again. I began to test our Tsaheylu by asking the Ikran to bank in various ways, flap a little higher, a little harder and just glide. It became as easy as breathing, I sat up a little straighter leaning with her as she gently banked to the left, that was right, the Ikran, it was a female. She chirped happily at my realisation, grinning we rose higher in the sky, her wings slicing through the warm air with ease as we moved as one. I squinted watching a dark shape frantically dive closer to where we were gliding in the air, the Ikran began to panic, a primal part of her brain recognising that whatever this was could potentially be a threat. Mirroring her panic we swiftly banked left before diving down into a hidden on a floating rocky island, we lay in wait, our breathing slow and quiet, our muscles tense, waiting for whatever it was to attack us. Wingbeats grew closer and louder echoing through the cave we were hiding in as my breath grew frantic, the Ikran hissed lowly bunching her muscles and preparing for a fight, so I did the same. Still, the wingbeats grew louder and louder the thundering clap bouncing off the cave walls until-
