Zelenia

If I hadn't seen it I wouldn't have believed it.

Jace's face; the look in his eyes told me he knew something.

But how, this didn't make any sense.

He stood a few feet away; his eyes trained on me and slowly nibbling his lip. He must've been debating whether or not to tell me and that hurt more than the fact that he was keeping some kind secret from me.

Since two years ago; when I had first met him, we've shared everything since. I more than him but that was because he's the good listener while I just talked a lot. He knew about my dreams, my nightmares. What I hated about myself as well as in others and the guilt I carried around like a burden.

And even when we didn't talk we would just hang out; enjoying each other's company.

Jace was my best-friend, he knew everything about me, except how I felt about him. But that was different, I didn't want to tell him because as much as I wanted to know if our feelings were mutual I also feared that they didn't.

But now it seemed he knew things about me, things I didn't know myself.

God! I detested secrets; especially when I was open about almost everything. And now he didn't want to tell me something that I was pretty sure had caused me to be here.

Anger rose from the pit of my gut and an angry tear dared to slip down my cheek; I wiped it away with an angry fist.

"Zee. . ." I looked up at him and he was watching me with a sympathetic gaze.

"You know something don't you?"

He opened his mouth to respond but then my Mom's head popped in and he clamped his mouth shut.

"Hi honey." She had a cup of coffee in one hand that she passed to Jace before coming over to me and giving me a tight squeeze. She released me and her eyes shone with love as she stroked the back of her hand down my cheek. "How are you feeling?"

All the anger seeped out and I smiled at her. "I'm fine. I don't even think we need to do this surgery?"

"I know you're scared but I have to trust in the doctor. Okay?"

I nodded and she smiled but I could see the sadness in her eyes. She was scared too.

Jace stepped up behind her, placed a hand on her shoulder and said with a reassuring smile, "It's going to be okay."

She gave him a nod and wiped at her eyes. Just then the same doctor and nurse came in. I smiled at the nurse but instead of returning the smile her eyes narrowed and the smile slipped from my face,

"Zelenia, how are you?" the doctor asked, smiled. Well at least he smiled. "I'm better, there isn't any pain and I feel fine."

"Well your chart agrees but you'll still have to do the surgery." I frowned and he gave me a sad smile. "I know your birthday is coming up and you'd rather spend it with your friends than in a hospital but look at it this way; with this surgery you'll live to see many more birthdays. Not just this one."

My mom eyes darted to mine and she turned rigid at the doctors words, if she wasn't a hundred percent sure before she was definitely on board now.

"So when, will you be. . . "

"Next four hours, the sooner the better."

The nurse still hadn't said a word and when I looked at her, she was still glaring at me. She most definitely woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.
