I remember everyone murmuring as we left the store. I also remember the look on Jason's face.
His face was distorted in anger, his eyes almost glowed green, the toys on the shelf were almost staring at us. I wanted to run back and give him a hug but mama had me by the arm, practically dragging me out the store.
The ride home was long and quiet, I felt sick too. When we got home mother looked at me as we sat on the carriage.
"I told you to behave, and you talk to a grown man. To your room, no food for you."
I slowly walk to my room. I crawl into bed and cry myself to sleep. I miss Jack. I miss Dad. I miss Sally. I don't like it here. I want to go back. I want to go home.
~~~~~~~~
A few days later I'm playing outside when mail comes. The nice postman smiles at me. "Excuse me young lady, is there a Miss Bella at this home?"
Mama was gone and so I smiled and hopped up "I'm Bella!" I run over and take the box from him, he also hands me the paper mail.
"Enjoy and have a wonderful day!" He waves and goes on his way.
I quickly run into the house, place the paper mail on the kitchen table and to my room. Mama never lets me have any mail but I got this first, and it has my name on it, maybe it's from papa! I tear the box open and inside is the red and cream bunny from Jason plus a card. I hugged the bunny then looked at the card.
"I'll always be here, by your side, even when you don't see me... and I will build for you, the world that you deserve. -Jason the toy maker" The card had a picture of him working on a toy on the back.
I smiled and hugged the bunny more. I felt so happy I started crying. "Thank you Jason. I promise to take care of this bunny to the best of my ability." I hugged the bunny until I heard mother come home. I quickly hid the box, bunny and picture and pretended to clean up my homework desk.
Mother came in and looked around then stared at me. "What have you done today Bella?"
I stop and look at her. "I played outside after doing dishes. After that I came and my room and started reorganizing my homework desk."
"Did mail come?" She crossed her arms and leaned on the door frame.
I nod quickly "I put the mail on the table in the kitchen." My heart was in my throat, I don't want her to know about the bunny.
She smiled a mean smile. "Good girl. I have groceries in the wagon, go get them and put them away."
I nod "yes mama." I run out to the wagon and start bringing in bags. When I come back in mama is talking with someone, she sounds really upset. I try to put things away quietly so I can hear what's being said.
"Are you sure it's him?"
"Yes ma'am"
"Do you know who did it?"
"No we are still searching."
"How long will that take?"
"Unsure miss."
"When can I see him?"
"I don't suggest that. His body is-"
"I don't care what he looks like! I want to make sure it's him!"
"We still need time to process the situation."
"I understand."
"That is all."
"Thank you, have a good day."After she lead the officer outside she came into the kitchen. She looked upset, like when she found out about Sally's death. She sat down in a chair and placed her head in her hands. "That fool..." she mumbled under her breath. Then she pointed to the fridge "get me a drink."
This was bad, mama only drank when she got bad news. Which wasn't often but enough to keep drinks around at all times. I quietly went to the pantry and got one of her beers for her, I brought it to the table and opened it for her. She quickly took it from me and drank it quickly. I stood there waiting for my next order. I hope she would let me go soon so I can go play with my bunny.
"Bella..." she sounds like she is about to cry.
"Yes mama?" I spoke softly as to not upset her.
"It's papa." She took another big gulp from her drink. "He is dead."
Dead
The word hit me like a truck, I felt my legs buckle underneath me and I hit the floor. My head was spinning and my heart was pounding. My eyes stung with tears as the word repeated around me. My papa was dead. I started breathing heavily and uncontrollably. How could this happen? I don't understand. My body was shaking and tears fell down my cheeks.
"Now that he is gone," mama began to chuckle "I can tell you the truth." She finished the can and turned to me. "Cause I don't care for you and I want you to feel more pain then me right now." She got up and went to the pantry and pulled out another beer. She opened it and drank it before looking back at me.
I struggled to stand but managed to pull my legs underneath me. "W-what is it mama?"
She glared at me and took another sip. "I'm not your mama, you rat."
"W-what?" My heart beat faster and faster.
"I said," she slammed the rest of the new can down and wiped her mouth on her arm. "I'm not your mama! You are Sally's child. Her and that bastard who killed her. You are the product of rape, no one wanted you alive except Sally. And sometimes even she regretted it. You shouldn't be here. I hate you and always have."
My heart almost stopped. Sally was my mom not my sister? My body grew weak and my head spun, this was too much. My vision went dark and I collapsed to the floor. Jack, Jason, someone, help me.
