Logan was leaning against the hallway wall when I left the office. His head perked up the second he heard the door close, but his shoulders faltered when he saw the expression on my face.
"I know that look," he confidently said, "that's the same look I have every time I talk to Breton." I ran my fingers through my hair as I bypassed him in the hall. "Hang on," he caught my bicep and kept me from walking any further. "Do I need to go in there and kick his ass?"
"No," I sighed, rolling my eyes.
"You alright?" He studied my eyes. I nodded and shrugged his hand off my arm. The action alarmed him as he seemed to have forgotten he had a hold on me.
"Where's the gym?" I glanced down the hallway away from the office.
"In the school. What happened?" He asked, attempting to keep me on track. A task which seemed impossible due to my mind spiraling. I began walking away from him, leaving the same way we had come in. Logan chased after me hoping to stop me again. "Fi," he called from behind me, "what happened?" He kept up on my heels.
"Gabe said my Trait would come back on its own, but offered the gym as a place to practice to coax it out. He thinks training will help fix the inconsistencies. I think he's full of shit."
"Wait," we went through the door leading back into the church, "what?"
"He also said," I ignored him and continued, "you could help me with said training since you're always in there." I stopped where I was when I no longer felt him behind me. "What?" I turned around and watched him process everything. "You don't actually have to. I'll figure it out," I said assuming that was what he was hung up on.
"That's not the part I'm concerned about," he said to ease my worries. "Is that the only solution he gave you?"
"Yeah," I said plainly then shrugged. "I don't think he's lying, but I don't think he's being totally honest either. What do you think?"
"I think it's worth a try. If there's no change over the next couple weeks, then we'll think of something else."
"Are you sure? I don't want to waste your time."
"You're not," he said with a smirk. "C'mon, let me show you where the gym is."
Back outside, Logan pointed to a small school building which was connected to the church by a glass awning. We walked the path toward the back door of the school building. He swiped a card from his pocket which a green light flashed on the pad and an unlocking noise echoed out, allowing us entrance to the abandoned school.
We walked the ghosted halls until we stopped outside a small room with a few torn leather armed chairs. Inside, sat a girl with long brown hair. She faced away from us and had a pair of thick headphones stationed over her ears. She hummed along to whatever music she was listening to unaware we had entered behind her. Logan reached over to the light switch and flicked the lights on and off a few times before the girl whipped around to acknowledge us. She smiled widely and removed her headphones.
"Sorry," she giggled, looking slightly embarrassed as if we interrupted something. She hopped up from her chair, but seemed hesitant to walk toward us.
"Not a problem," Logan announced, "on the way to the gym."
"I hope you're not going to take the pretty red head there. She needs to see cooler places, like the tower." She teased as I tilted my gaze up at Logan, and watched his cheeks flush a color close to my hair. After a long pause, she spoke up again, "She's with you, isn't she?"
"Yes, Kayla, she's here," Logan spoke through his teeth. Kayla reached up and covered her mouth.
She walked toward us confidently and stopped directly in front of Logan. She held out her hand in front of me and smiled brightly. I softly grabbed her hand and gave it a shake introducing myself. I studied her face admiring her adorable freckles which coated her cheeks and nose. My glance moved up to her pale blue eyes and realized her pupils were clouded. I couldn't tell from far away, but up close you could. She was staring directly at me, but she couldn't actually see me. I released her hand and waited for someone to say something.
