The next morning, Rei woke up early and got dressed for school. She put on her black hoodie and pants, and brushed her short black hair. As she looked in the mirror, she couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. She knew that going to school meant being around other people, and that meant keeping her powers hidden.
Rei had been living on Earth for a few years now, and had managed to make a few friends. But she always felt like she was holding something back, like she couldn't truly be herself around them. It was a lonely existence, but it was the only one she knew.
She left her apartment and walked to the bus stop, joining the other students on their way to school. As the bus pulled up, Rei felt a surge of anxiety. She had always been an outsider, and she didn't know how to fit in with the other students.
But as she stepped onto the bus, she was surprised to see a familiar face. It was her friend Yuki, a girl she had met in one of her classes. Yuki was smiling, waving excitedly at Rei. "Hey! I'm so glad I ran into you!" she exclaimed.
Rei smiled back, feeling a warmth in her chest. Yuki was one of the few people she felt comfortable around, and she was grateful for her friendship. They took a seat together on the bus, chatting about their plans for the weekend.
As they arrived at school, Rei felt a sense of nervous excitement. She had always loved learning, and she was eager to see what the day had in store. They made their way to their first class, sitting down at their desks.
The teacher began the lesson, and Rei felt her mind start to wander. She was bored, and she couldn't help but think about her powers. She had been able to do some amazing things with them, things that would make her stand out if anyone found out.
But she quickly pushed those thoughts away. She couldn't risk exposing her powers, not when she had come so far to keep them hidden. She turned her attention back to the lesson, trying to focus on what the teacher was saying.
As the day went on, Rei found herself feeling more and more restless. She couldn't wait to get home, to be alone with her thoughts. But as she was packing up her books, she felt a tap on her shoulder.
It was Yuki. "Hey, do you want to come over to my place after school? We can study together and have some snacks," she said, grinning.
Rei hesitated for a moment. She had never been to Yuki's house before, and she didn't know if she was ready to let her guard down around her. But something about Yuki's friendly smile put her at ease.
"Sure, that sounds like fun," Rei said, smiling back.
As they walked to Yuki's house, Rei felt a sense of happiness she hadn't felt in a long time. She was making a connection with someone, and it felt good to be a part of something. Maybe she didn't have to hide her powers forever, she thought. Maybe there was a way to be herself, and still be accepted.
But as they arrived at Yuki's house, Rei's sense of unease returned. She knew that if she wanted to be accepted, she would have to let go of her secret. And that was a risk she wasn't sure she was ready to take.
