Hades and Delilah's relationship continued to blossom as they spent more and more time together. They talked about everything under the sun, from their favorite books to their biggest fears. But one thing that always lingered in the back of Delilah's mind was Hades' true identity as a god.
One night, as they sat on the roof of Delilah's house, watching the stars twinkle overhead, Delilah finally worked up the courage to ask him about it.
"Hades, can I ask you something?" she said softly.
"Of course, Delilah. Anything," he replied, turning to face her.
"You said you were the god of the Underworld, right?" Delilah said tentatively.
Hades nodded. "Yes, that's right."
"And what does that mean, exactly?" Delilah asked, her curiosity piqued.
Hades hesitated for a moment, then took a deep breath. "It means that I'm responsible for the souls of the dead. When mortals die, their souls come to me, and I judge whether they go to the Elysian Fields or Tartarus."
Delilah stared at him in awe. "That's... that's amazing. But also kind of scary."
Hades chuckled. "I suppose it can be, at times. But it's also a great responsibility, and one that I take very seriously."
Delilah nodded, then hesitated for a moment before speaking again. "Hades, can I ask you something else?"
"Of course, Delilah. What is it?"
"Do you... do you think I'll ever have to go to the Underworld?" Delilah asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Hades reached out and took her hand. "I don't know, Delilah. But if you ever do, I promise I'll be there for you."
Delilah looked up at him, her heart pounding in her chest. She knew then that she was in love with him, completely and irrevocably.
But as much as she loved him, there was still one thing that troubled her. She didn't want to be separated from him, not even in death. So she decided to take matters into her own hands.
"Hades, I... I don't want to be apart from you, ever. Not even in the afterlife," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Hades looked at her, his eyes searching hers. "What are you saying, Delilah?""
I'm saying... I'm saying I want to come to the Underworld with you. I want to be with you always," she said, her voice growing stronger with each word.
Hades' eyes widened in surprise. "Delilah, I don't think you understand what you're saying. The Underworld is not a place for mortals. It's dark, dangerous, and full of terrors."
"I know that, Hades. But I also know that I love you. And if being with you means living in the Underworld, then I'm willing to take that risk," Delilah said firmly.
Hades stared at her for a moment, then let out a deep sigh. "Delilah, I can't just take you to the Underworld. It's not that simple."
"I know that. But... but can't we make a deal? You're a god, right? You must have some kind of power to make it happen," Delilah said, her eyes pleading.
Hades hesitated for a moment, then looked away. "Delilah, I don't want to make any deals with you. I don't want you to feel like you owe me. Delilah frowned. "What do you mean? I don't understand."
"I mean that I don't want you to feel like you have to do anything to be with me. You're free to make your own choices, Delilah. And if you decide that you don't want to live in the Underworld, I'll respect that," Hades said firmly.
Delilah shook her head. "But I do want to live in the Underworld. I want to be with you, Hades. Please, can't we make a deal?"
Hades looked at her for a long moment, then let out a sigh. "All right, Delilah. I'll make you a deal. But it won't be easy, and it won't be without its risks."
"What do you mean?" Delilah asked, her heart racing with excitement and fear.
"I mean that if you want to come to the Underworld with me, you'll have to prove yourself worthy. You'll have to pass a series of tests, to show that you have the courage and strength to survive in the Underworld," Hades said, his eyes narrowing.
Delilah felt a shiver run down her spine. She knew that Hades wasn't exaggerating. The Underworld was a dangerous place, full of monsters and ghosts and other dark things. But she also knew that she was willing to do whatever it took to be with Hades.
"What kind of tests?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Hades leaned in closer to her, his eyes glittering in the moonlight. "Tests of strength and endurance. Tests of wit and cunning. Tests of courage and sacrifice. If you can pass these tests, Delilah, then I will take you to the Underworld with me, and you will become my queen."
Delilah's heart skipped a beat. She had never imagined herself as a queen, let alone a queen of the Underworld. But the thought of being with Hades, of ruling by his side, was too tempting to resist.
"I... I accept," she said, her voice barely audible.
Hades smiled, a slow, wicked smile that sent shivers down Delilah's spine. "Good. Then let the tests begin."
And with that, Delilah knew that her life would never be the same again.
