"hey, demi!! let's go out and see what's around for us to do." demi heard her younger brother, felix, yell from across the hall. she rolled her eyes and groaned.
"who's gonna watch oli?" she yelled back, throwing her walkman to the side since she was done putting in new batteries. felix walked into her room and shrugged.
"he can stay here until ma gets back, can't he? we won't be gone for long anyways." he stated, staring at his sister, who was laying in her bed. he smiled once he noticed his sister give him a look and sat up.
"okay, fine. only 20 minutes and we get our asses back, yeah? i don't feel like getting killed today, felix." she huffed, getting up and grabbing a random flannel from off her floor and putting it over her bad brains tee shirt. felix smiled and nodded a few times before running out to the living room of their new apartment and yelling at their little brother that they were leaving.
demi chuckled softly and looked in her mirror that was propped up against the wall. she looked herself over and shrugged. she was wearing baggy jeans, a bad brains tee shirt and an over sized flannel. she threw her old vans on and called it good. she grabbed her back pack and threw some money and her camera in it and flung it over a shoulder.
"come on doofus let's go. oh, oliver are you okay staying here for a bit? me and felix are going to walk the block to check the neighborhood out." she asked as she walked into the living room.
her youngest brother scoffed, "I don't care. get me some snacks, would you?" he said, hardly looking away from the tv.
"manners, kid." demi warned, not wanting to deal with the attitude at the moment. oliver peeled his attention from the tv and glared at his sister. she put her hands up in self defense and mumbled fine under her breath.
demi and felix left the apartment and started down the hallway. the two talked about what they think school is going to be like, if it'd be different than the small town school their used to or not. school wasn't too close, since it was only the second week of july, but it was something to talk about.
after a bit of walking, they passed some more apartment buildings, some shops, and a couple restaurants. they found a record shop and went and looked through there for a bit. demi found a suicidal tendencies vinyl and bought it. after a bit more walking, they stopped at a corner store and went inside. it looked like a regular corner store, isles full of snacks, canned goods, beer, drinks, soda, milk, you name it."hey lix, go pick something out for you and oli, okay? i'm gonna go find some drinks." demi said over her shoulder, as her brother was already looking through the snack isle. she noticed a small group of teenagers, who seemed to be around her age, up at the counter laughing at what the man behind the counter said.
there was four boys, and one girl. the girl was shorter than everyone else, but most likely taller than demi, so she thought. she had long black hair that was in a messy braid, ripped jeans, a misfits tee shirt and a dark blue zip up hoodie. then there was the shortest of the guys, he had short dark brown hair, a baseball cap on, basketball shorts and a white tee shirt on. the next guy was a little taller, he had fluffy brown hair, jeans, a blue tank top and a leather jacket and was holding a skateboard. the guy next to the girl has curly dark hair, jeans, and a red hoodie on. and the last guy was the tallest, he had shaggy dark brown hair and baggy cargo shorts with a baggy gray tee shirt.
it seemed like demi was observing the group for a few seconds too much, because the guy with fluffy hair looked over at her and gave her a small smile. her eyes widen and look away quickly, turning around to go grab some soda for her and her two brothers.
"hey de- woah you okay?" felix came around the corner and started laughing at his older sister, as she grabbed some bottles of coke and glared at him.
"i-i'm fine. let's go.
," she answered shortly and made her way to the group of teenagers with her brother following behind her. "um.. excuse me, are you guys um, checking out?" she asked the group."huh? oh hey, no no we aren't. sorry about that hun." the fluffy haired boy looked down at her and smiled, and then hit the boy with the hat and motioned him to move out of the way. the guy with the hat looked at her up and down and smirked, mumbling an apology. felix chuckled and patted demi on her shoulder as they both set their things on the counter.
"hey kids, this all?" the guy behind the counter asked as he started ringing up the snacks and drinks. demi nodded and pulled out some cash. "say, you two aren't from here, are ya?"
"um-" demi started before felix cut her off. "no sir, we just moved into one of the apartment buildings down the street." he smiled.
"that explains it. well, welcome to brookyn kids, it couldn't get better than this!" the man chuckled, opening his arms out. "im tony, but the kids around her call me papa tony, right?" after he said that, there were a few "that's right!" that came from some of the teenagers.
demi put the cash on the counter and nodded a thank you to tony before grabbing the bag of snacks. before she could sneak away, her brother held her arm.
"it's nice to meet you papa tony, i'm felix! and this is my older sister, demitria, demi for short." felix beamed.
"uh, lix we have to go-" demi said softly, to embarrassed by her brothers actions to say anything. she noticed the fluffy haired boy watch her.
"i'm adam, but you can call me ad," the guy with the baseball cap winked at demi, "and that's adam, but we call him yauch, that's mike, that's zane, and this lovely lady is jude." he said as he pointed to everyone. they all nodded or said hello with a smile.
"hey, maybe you and I could hang sometime, sounds cool yeah?" jude said happily, looking at demi.
"um, I suppose.." demi shrugged, not really sure what to say. jude beamed at her and grabbed a sharpie from tony and wrote her number on demi's arm, telling her to call anytime. demi just nodded and smiled awkwardly at the black haired girl.
"well, it's time we go home demi, ma will have our heads if we don't get back before she does. it's nice to meet yall." felix smiled and waved at everyone, ad gave him a fist bump and suggested they hang out sometime as well.
once they got a good ways away from the corner store felix starting laughing. "that shit was so weird, wasn't it?"
"uh huh- i've never met anyone that excited to meet a new person before." demi said slightly in awe, chuckling.
"man, and did you see how awkward you were? that was hilarious." felix laughed harder. demi glared at him and punched him in the arm.
once they got back to the apartment, demi threw felix' chosen snacks and her drink st oliver and left to go to her room before she could her her youngest brother complain about 'getting the wrong snack'.
demi took out her new vinyl and put it in her record player and pressed play. she plopped down on her bed and stared up at the ceiling as 'suicide's an alternative / you'll be sorry' started playing. welp, demitria, this is gonna be one hell of a last year of school, demi thought to herself as she fixed her gaze on her bedroom window.
