*RECAP*
I shook my head forcefully to get rid of the wretched thoughts and concentrated on the stack of paperwork before me.

*ROSIE POV*
I entered my condo, relieved. I owed two months of rent and by the end of that month, I was going to be evicted. Nevertheless, the landlady was being very generous allowing me such debt, considering I had just moved there and she didn't know me. I moved to L.A. because someone found me out in New York and I thought since it was just one person everything would be okay. Unfortunately, that was not the case. The very next day cameramen invaded my front lawn. So I packed some things and left. I didn't want that kind of life for my daughter.
The move really took a toll on me financially, but I had to move to a big city because I was running out of money and there were many employment opportunities in my field.
Which brings me to my surprise at getting the job. He didn't seem to recognize me, so he musn't have made a background check on me, because if he had, I wouldn't have been hired.
No complaints here. The less he knows, the better.
I lazily walked to the closet and hung up my coat. I had to get a jump-start on dinner but all of that walking tired me out.
"Hey Rosie. Anna Grace is asleep," my babysitter told me as she walked into the kitchen. I smiled thankfully. Having just arrived to this building at the beginning of the summer, I was truly blessed with an awesome neighbor like Summer who didn't mind babysitting for free.
"Thanks Sum. So good news... I got the job!" I shouted excitedly. She grinned and hugged me. "This means you finally get payed. I don't know how much yet but when my boss tells me, I promise to let you know." She pulled back and frowned.
"You don't have to pay me, Rose. You do so much for me already. Babysitting for you is the only way I can give back to you," she whispered calmly.
Her ocean blue eyes filled with tears. I felt so sorry for this girl. She's nothing but seventeen and from what I heard, people gossiped about her in school. Her parents were millionaires but were extremely irresponsible and never home, neglecting to leave her money for needs as basic as food.
The day I discovered her, she was digging through my trash outside my door. All the money her parents made and they couldn't spare a dime for their child. How selfish!
"You don't owe me anything. I owe you for keeping me sane," I laugh trying to lighten the mood. She was the only person that knew who I really was and listened to what I had to say rather than those trashy tabloids.
I wiped the tears off her face and we walked to the kitchen to prepare dinner. She always helped even though I told her she did't have to.
"So school starts next week. It's my senior year. Yay," I laugh again listening to her sarcastic tone that she didn't pull off very well.
"Well, at least it's your last year so you won't have to worry for long," she nodded but a frown slipped on her pretty little face.
"I know that look. What's wrong?" she smiled and gave me small shove. "I'm fine. I just want to look pretty for once," she whispered playing with her fingernails, something she did when she was sad.
My phone beeped on the counter.
Humph, that's odd. No one ever texts.
I grabbed it and immediately frowned at the text.
Your starting salary is 50,000. Be here at 7:30 or you're fired. I don't accept tardiness or excuses.
-Your boss
Wow, he is so rude, and without reason. He could have been at least nice about it.
But I guess all guys are jerks.
I put my phone down and began chopping up the onion, only to see from the corner of my eye Summer staring at me with a raised eyebrow. Before she could say anything I began speaking.
"So I think we should go back to school shopping tomorrow after I get off work. My new salary is higher than I expected," I looked to her for agreement but her eyes went all shifty.
I hated when she was like this. She wouldn't take anything from me that wasn't food.
"We are going and that's that. Have Anna Grace and yourself ready by four. I should be off by then," I said firmly. I had an idea.
We finished the food and I went to wake my daughter from her nap. She rubbed her eyes sleepily. "Mommy," she whispered groggily.
I smiled and reached for her. Her tiny tanned hands and legs immediately clamped around my neck and waist as I carried her out of the room. This little booger was my life. She was the spitting image of me except for her huge gray eyes that were so adorable. She inherited the cute little pout from me, a trait that backfired on me all the time and her eyes didn't make it any better. She was definitely going to be a heart-breaker.
