Days flew by, like the eagles returning to camp from a patrol. Soon I was used to my daily life at Snowdrop army and I was getting used to the wild. Each day, I'd wake up, go with the bears to hunt deer and train with Fanfare, before having supper and sleeping in my heather bush. A truly wild life. I enjoyed my new life, knowing I was respected and appreciated by most of the animals. However, when I missed the target centre, when I made a little mistake, I always felt so stupid. I guess I felt I was a nusiance. But it appeared I must be kind of good at archery, as when I'd finished training one summery evening, Fanfare went up to me. Human, don't expect this to be a permanent position. But one of the warriors has gone and injured himself, so you've been recruited to go on a patrol tommorow." I paused for a moment, thinking as I pulled out an arrow from a tree. I was to go on a patrol! But was I really good enough? Fanfare pulled out an arrow from a tree and reminded me,
"This won't be a permanent position though. You've still got some training to do until you're of patrol standard."
I nodded. I didn't have to say anything else.
"Glad you've accepted." Fanfare told me, licking her black foreleg impatiently, "I was concerned you'd chicken out." I sighed. I was irritated that Fanfare didn't expect much from me. I tried not to show this though - once I'd annoyed Fanfare and she'd lost her temper, fastened her razor sharp teeth onto my leg - and the scab from that still remained on my leg today. So after packing away my arrows into my quiver that I'd made, Fanfare led me back to camp. Only this time, I was invited over to a large shady tree to talk. Fanfare accompanied me to the tree. There were a few animals under the tree, 5 bears, black and grizzly, 3 wolves (2 of which were the wolves who'd mocked me on my first day!) and Fanfare. 1 of the bears stood on his hind legs and beckoned me over to a log under the tree before sitting down again.
"Greetings, Skye." The bear welcomed me in a familiarly gruff voice. "We have met before - I'm Shadowberry. This patrol is having a meeting which I'm expecting you to contribute to." After he let me know this, the meeting began. It wasn't actually that exciting a meeting, as all that happened was that I got an arm guard to protect me should the bow string twang against me, I got a new quiver, told what to do and laughed at. (by the nasty she-wolves) But even so, I listened intently, knowing that the next day was sure to be exciting.
