My new life seemed to be very complicated, full of troubles and concerns with the threat of the Nightstar army attacking. But little did I know that we were already on the warpath and would battle soon. My life was going to get more complicated. Before I knew this though, I encountered another problem. This time, it wasn't to do with armies or animals. It took place when one day, Franky was going to practice throwing knives at the target I used for archery practice. Walking along, Franky and I talked casually.
"How many times have you hit the bullseye?" Franky asked, squiralling along the beaten earth.
"About 15 times in total - but not in one go." I answered. Aiming was something I needed to work on.
"Nothing to feel bad about." Franky chirruped. "I didn't hit the target for weeks when I started!" We laughed at this lightly. Suddenly, Franky stopped dead in his tracks. His tail bristled, he didn't blink. I heard a weird, angry kee-kee-kee-eerr! noise escape from his bared teeth.
"Franky?" I asked worriedly.
"Shush, Skye. Smell the air - I don't recognise the smell." Frankly spoke in hushed tones.
I listened and smelt the air. Nothing seemed to be wrong. But seconds later, I saw something tall walking about. He was a human!
"He's a human." I whispered to Franky, who shot off towards the human.
"Lemme at him!" screamed the ferret as he ran determindly.
Frightened Franky would hurt himself, I bolted off after him. I came to a stop in a coniferous part of the forest and Franky crept behind me, fur bristled, ready to bite. By now I could see the boy clearly. He was a little taller than me, about 15. His hair was fair and neatly cut. The boy was searching for something and was saying,
"I am totally lost. Even my GPS won't redirect! Stupid thing." he had a very posh voice.
Franky made a chirrupy call and the boy turned round. He saw Franky first. Then me. The boy's expression of delight for the ferret turned sour when he spotted me. He ran over to me and lunged for Franky. Franky jumped into my arms, shrieking.
"My ferret!" yelled the boy angrily. "Why have you got my ferret?"
"Franky's your ferret?" I asked disbelievingly.
This boy was the most unlikely ferret owner ever. His shoes were neatly shined, his clothes perfectly clean, with a correctly tied tie. He looked immaculate. "Yes, he's my ferret. Now give him back." he tried to grab Franky again and I held the ferret out of reach.
"He can't be yours. You're too proud of your good looks." I complained.
The boy snorted and replied,
"well you're one to talk! Look at you! You're in no fit state to care for anything! You can't even take care of yourself!" he scoffed.
I looked at myself. I had gone for months without a mirror so'd forgotten how I looked - unclean. There were twigs and leaves in my now tangled black hair and my clothes were caked in a thick crust of mud and dust, from my once sky blue top to my navy denim jeans. I responded,
"I'm Skye. Welcome to my world. What's your name?"
The boy answered bluntly,
"Giles. Now give me back my ferret or I'll call the police."
"Doubt they'd get past here." I replied thoughtfully. "With Nightstar and Snowdrop army patrols happening, they wouldn't stand a chance. It's a wonder you haven't been attacked already, Nightstar army is trying to capture this place."
Giles looked at me as if I was speaking gibberish.
"No animals can overpower police cars. It's not scientifically possible. Now tell me why - "
"- your ferret is free now. He'll tell you why - in English - why he won't go back to being a pet. Nothing in this wood is scientifically possible because science is flawed. Now come with me before one of the Nightstar hounds kills you." I interupted sharply, grabbing Giles's hand and leading him through the forest back to Snowdrop army. Giles looked as if he was going to argue, but decided against it. He shut up reluctantly. But on the way back, Franky jumped off me and squeaked at Giles,
"I don't need to take you prisoner to tell you why I don't want to go with you - I am a free spirit, fed up with being caged for days with no interaction while you go on gadgets!"
Giles answered back,
"Franky, that's not true. It's only because I go to a posh grammar school that I have so much homework! I always make time for you."
Franky squeaked back,
"True, true. But Giles, you don't understand - if Skye and I don't stay here, sinister creatures will do horrible things to the world. We can't let them win!"
Giles still looked awfully confused. He knew so much, but so little about me.
"Giles, maybe it's time you left the wood before you're swept up in an adventure - I don't think it's your kind of thing." I advised him.
Giles nodded.
"Okay, I'll do that. Bye Skye." Then he walked off.
After I saw Giles walk away, I mulled over the encounter with him. Was it just me, or was he not as posh as he seemed? And how did he get so far into the forest without being attacked? Also, I saw a twinkle in his eye - did he admire my carefree aproach, like me? Could I really be interested in him? Must be my imagination. i turned around and walked away, with Franky following behind me.
