Dim sunlight flickered through the vine entrance of the nursery and onto 4 kits that had been born that sunrise. Starlook curled around her kits and watched them with loving eyes. The scent of milk brought a sense of calm to dovekit and she nuzzled closer to her mother. Days passed and the kits hadn't opened their eyes. "What's taking them so long?" A voice complained as a sharp pain in her tail made dovekit shriek in pain.
"Jaykit!" Another voice hissed and the pain left.
"Don't hiss at him!," another voice hissed back "he's just a kit!".
"They're even more lazy than oakkit!" The first voice complained again. Fear struck dovekit as she heard fast footsteps heading her way causing her to open her eyes and push herself against her mother and sibling. Starlook pulled dovekit close as a dark ginger Tom ran over. "Get away!" She yelled, protecting dovekit with her tail and causing the Tom to back away scared. The dark ginger she-cat pulled the Tom close, glaring at starlook. Dovekit glared up at starlook, admiring her musky blonde fur.
"Hello little one." Her mother's voice interrupted her thoughts, calm and loving.
Dovekit opened her mouth to respond but fell over as she was hit in the head with something.
"Jaykit!" A white and dark ginger she- cat hissed earning a warning hiss from the dark ginger she-cat. Dovekit looked to see a ball of moss laying on the floor next to her. Unsure of what to do she stayed still and looked at starlook for reassurance. Jaykit started to purr amusingly and dovekit felt anger prickle her pelt. 'He's laughing at me!' She thought to herself as she picked up the ball of moss and threw it back at Jaykit, hitting him in the eye. The dark ginger kit shrieked dramatically and ran over to birdsong who was glaring at dovekit. Starlook's tail pulled dovekit close and birdsong looked away, grooming jaykit's fur. Dovekit looked up at her mother, worried she would be angry but starlook didn't seem to mind. "Don't let anyone push u around, stand up for yourself." She whispered to her as she licked some stray fur from dovekit's pelt back. A purr rose in dovekit's throat, happy that starlook was on her side. This nice setting was broken suddenly by a sudden set of paws pushing dovekit onto her side. Dovekit struggled, trying to throw the thing off her. In doing so she turned her head to see a kit similar looking to her. "Lunakit, let your sister up." Her mother mewed sternly. Lunakit moved back giving dovekit the chance to get to her paws and cuff him around the ear playfully. Lunakit flinched and moved back a bit, surprised at the sudden attack. As lunakit stepped back a loud mew of protest filled the air. Lunakit and dovekit looked over to see Flowerkit glaring at them both and lunakit's paw on her tail. "Get off me!" She hissed and lunakit stepped away quickly. Flowerkit got up and pounced onto lunakit, the two of them starting to play fight. Dovekit noticed another kit, smaller than them and as white as clouds. The small kit stretched and looked up at dovekit with big blue eyes. "Mosskit!" Dovekit squeaked happily, seeing her brother was now awake . Mosskit stumbled onto his feet and tried to hit dovekit with his paw but fell to onto his side instead. Dovekit purred with amusement and helped mosskit up, letting him lean against her to stay steady. "Their awake!" Dovekit looked back to see a large white Tom looking down at her and her littermates with a squirrel in his jaws. The Tom rushed forward and licked dovekit's head, dropping the squirrel next to starlook.
"Kits, this is your father cloudtail." She purred as she touched noses with the Tom before taking a bite out of the squirrel. Dovekit looked up at cloudtail, amazed at how tall he was. Cloudtail opened his mouth to say something but was interrupted by a loud voice. "Cloudtail!" Cloudtail looked back at the nursery entrance. "I have to go," he looked back at the kits "goodbye small ones.". The white Tom left the nursery. Dovekit watched him with curiosity and starlook spoke up. "He's deputy, he helps Quartzstar protect us all." She mewed and dovekit sat up with pride before mewing "I'm gonna be a deputy!" . The queens purred with amusement and lunakit spoke up "you can't be deputy! Only strong cats can be deputy!". "
Dovekit felt embarrassment warm her pelt. "Everyone is strong in their own way, dovekit can be deputy if she wanted to be." Shellshadow mewed. Dovekit stared at the queen, thinking to herself. 'I can do what I put my mind to.'
