"We loved with a love that was more than love"
- Edgar Allan Poe

Morticia looked in the mirror. She smoothed her hair and straightened her dress. Then, she positioned herself in her chair in just the way she knew Gomez liked. She eagerly awaited his return.

However, after a few minutes, Gomez still hadn't returned. Morticia felt a combination of frustration and confusion. This wasn't like him. Her husband was able to be distracted by nothing when he had his eyes on her. He was coming right back to finish what they had started. She smiled, and she could still feel his mustache against her lips. She sighed, thinking of his kisses.

More time passed, and she gave up waiting. She stepped out the door and walked over to the garage. She leaned against the house in a flirtatious pose.

"Oh bubele!" she called out in a low seductive voice. She waited for him to rush over to her and pepper her with kisses. Nothing happened.

Her frustration and confusion converted to anxiety. She dropped her pose and rushed into the garage. It was empty. Not only was Gomez gone, but the car as well. Her mind reeled as she tried to piece together what could have possibly happened. She walked up and down the street, looking for their vehicle. She kept calling out to him.

"Bubele?" nothing. "Darling?" silence. "Gomez?" she pleaded. She received no response. The street was dark and quiet. Her husband was nowhere to be found.

She rushed back into the house and up the stairs. She ran to her mother-in-law's door and knocked. After a moment, the door opened, and a dazed grandmama appeared in front of her.

'Oh, mama," Morticia gasped, out of breath. "I can't find Gomez. He went to the car to fetch something for me and never came back. I've called for him and looked everywhere that I can think of."

Mama's eyes widened as she took everything in. She blinked several times, then took Morticia's hand in hers.

"It's going to be alright, my dear," she reassured her. "There must be some mistake. We'll find him."

Mama knocked on Fester's door, and then on Lurch's. She explained the situation to both. Then, each adult took a lantern and walked outside. They each chose a direction and searched for him.

Morticia called for him until her voice was hoarse, and then she called for him some more. Desperation was building inside her. She kept rubbing her empty ring finger, a constant reminder that he was gone. She kept walking and calling for him until the sun started to rise. Then, she turned back toward the house. Her children would wake up soon, and she wanted to be there when they did. As she walked back, she didn't call out, but her eyes searched for any sign of him.

When she walked through the front door, a small part of her hoped that he would be there, waiting for her. Alas, there was no sign of him.
