I have a confession to make: I'm not a fan of the beloved, classic animated film. I don't understand why the anthromorphic animals and I don't think there was a reason to update the original story to a steampunk space opera.
My pitch is to make it meta and not a straight adaptation — The story will take place in the distant future and the 'Treasure Island' book is present in the text. The protagonist is a young boy who is very fond the book and he is Jim Hawkins' stand-in or expy, even viewing himself as such. The rest of the cast are also expy of the existing characters from the original story, but since it's not a straight adaptation, it's possible to subvert expecations and have them be expy of one character and ended up as another.
I don't have a cast or even the characters in mind, except that I strongly envision Jude Law as Long John Silver's expy. Disney already cast him as Captain Hook, though, so putting reality into account for a second, this seems redundant unfortunately. Other candidates for the role are John Cho and Antonio Banderas.
The movie's aesthetic would be a cross between 'Guardians of the Galaxy' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean'.
