This could've been a forty-minutes Special Presentation or an hour-thirty minutes movie on Disney+... realistically. I do have preference towards theatrical releases.
The thing is, this would've been a comedy-drama. In fact, it's going for a mumblecore vibe or the Duplass Brothers. The story is just Peter Quill re-adjusting himself on Earth, being a regular joe, living with his granddad.
The tricky bit is trying to have the audience accept the tonal change for the character. James Gunn's work, I've to admit, made it easier. But Quill was $200+ million movie character — the last time the audience saw him, he was in space! — so him being in something far smaller in scale would still be jarring. There's lots to be done to make this not feel gimmicky.
