Chapter Three

TW: Child loss

After Bucky was settled in a room for the night, Sam lay in bed watching Jessi do her nighttime routine. He studied her and noticed she seemed sad.

Jessi got into bed and cuddled close to him. She breathed in the scent of cedar, wild strawberries, and a hint of white pepper. She could never figure out why Sam smelt like that, but she enjoyed it. Sam tightened his arms around Jessi, pulling her even closer.

"Talk to me, Babygirl." Sam whispered, running a hand up and down her bare shoulder.

Jessi burrowed more into him, shaking slightly.

"Okay, Babygirl, why were two of your ex teammates and your friends from LAFD here?" Sam asked, pulling away slightly, cupping her face.

"Umm.I..I miscarried while you were on that mission with Steve." Jessi whispered.

Sam sat up and looked down at her in shock. "Wait, what?"

"I miscarried." Jessi replied, trying not to cry at the sadness in Sam's eyes.

"Shit." Sam muttered, pulling Jessi onto his lap. "Babygirl, why didn't you call me?"

"You had to focus on what was going on." Jessi whispered, running her hands along his arms. "Thanos was threatening to wipe out half the universe."

"That's not more important than you, Jessi. Does Danny know?"

"No. Only Sarah, Sam, G, Hen, and Chim knew." Jessi replied as tears slipped down her cheeks.

Sam sighed softly, pulling her to where she was lying on top of him. He held her tight.

~In LA~

Chim sighed and dialed a number.

"Hello?"

"Danny, it's Chim. You need to get to Jessi. She's going to need you."

"What happened?"

Chim started telling Danny everything that he knew.
