before the apocalypse turned the entire world upside down, joel was a caring father who worked hard to raise his beloved daughter, sarah, all by his lonesome. to be completely honest, he acted like an entirely different person back then. he was kind to those he met, often striking up a casual conversation with total strangers when out either working on a job with his brother tommy, or while getting his groceries checked out at a local convenience store — yet after sarah's death and society crumbling to pieces at the snap of a finger, he morphed into the damaged shell of a man that he once was. he became a more apathetic, broody, and ruthless man who's often described as a violent thug, a ferocious killer, and a vicious torturer. he's able to kill his enemies with noteworthy brutality, earning him an infamous reputation among those he's encountered who ended up living to tell the tale of joel miller.

as he'd grown older and spent time with ellie in jackson though, joel's humanity had been restored, causing him to have more of an optimistic and carefree attitude, acting much like he had before the world went to shit.

sarah's dad has got it goin' on... ; set in an alternate universe where the apocalypse never happened. your character is best friends with sarah (both in their early twenties + in college) and has the absolute biggest crush on joel — doing everything she possibly can to try and get his attention on her.

co-workers + friends to lovers ; your character is tasked to go out on patrol routes with joel in jackson. we could do a slow-burn roleplay where they start going on said routes and get to know one another a little better while out on the job until they become close friends, or we can jump right into the part where they're already friends with benefits — either way, your character will end up developing feelings for joel, who has concerns for how others in the community will perceive the two if they were to get together due to their significant age gap; so they decide to keep their relationship a secret. this will create a lot of tension between them as time goes on due to your character's eagerness to show off her boyfriend to everyone else in town.
