”Students! Welcome to your first day at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. But before you attend your classes, we have another student to sort out.” Dumbledore spoke from where the teachers were sitting. Professor McGonagall led Jinx to the front of the hall and placed her on a stool with only three legs. An old patched and shabby hat was shoved over her head, blinding her. She instantly put herself on guard, but didn’t have the chance to react, because the second it touched her head it shouted. “HUFFLEPUFF!”
She saw one of the tables in the middle get up from their seats and cheer so she assumed that would be her house. She hurried down to the table and sat down next to a boy presumably a few years older than her. “Cedric Diggory and you are?” He extended his hand and Jinx shook it. “Jinx.” She whispered back. Cedric told her about the castle and he also showed her to the Hufflepuff common room, before class started. On their way around the castle, Cedric told her everything about this guy named Harry Potter. “Yeah he is in your year. Got sorted into Gryffindor.” Jinx didn’t care that much, only nodded and pretended to be interested.
After receiving her schedule she waved goodbye to Cedric and made her way towards Potions. The classroom was a very large square – sized room, with large tables and windows. She sat down next to a boy with glasses. He smiled welcoming towards her, but he also looked just as nerves as what she did. “I am-“ He was about to present himself, when Snape entered. His usual scowl plastered on his face and the black cloak billowing around the thin figure.
Jinx looked down at her paper and fell out of Snape’s class from the first minute. Her eyes wandered over to Harry’s piece of paper where he had written notes.
“I can teach you how to bewitch the mind and ensnare the senses. I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, and even put a stopper in death. However it seems some of you have come to class to not PAY attention." He threw a piece of paper at Jinx witch made her jump up. Making the rest of the class giggle. Embarrassed she sank down in her stool and looked sheepishly up at the sneering professor. “Ten points.” He said as punishment, which made the Hufflepuff part of the classroom sigh annoyed.
Jinx hadn’t dared to speak during class and when it finally ended she let out a big sight of relive. Quickly she gathered her stuff and leaped for the door. Harry hurried after her and they didn’t stop until they were out of ears reach. Shivers ran down Jinx’s spine and she made the movement exaggerating. Making Harry laugh. Harry had gotten his turn with the cold professor he too. “That was close.” She whispered and he nodded agreeing.
On her way back to the common room a boy with a pale face, blond hair and a smirk plastered on his face. Believing he was better than anyone else stumbled into her. “Ouch sorry, I didn’t know where I was going.” She said and looked up at him. “Please don’t say you are a mud – blood, I just touched you.” He said with so much disgust in his voice it almost scared her. “Off course not! I come from a wealthy pure blood family! How dare you come with such insults!” She shrieked. Draco’s smirk grew wider.” Ah finally someone decent here. I am Malfoy by the way. Draco Malfoy.” They shook and he asked. “So what’s your name?”
“Jinx…De…La…Vega.” She said, remembering the exclusive name from a Zorro poster outside the movie theater. Not that she had ever watched the film, but there were easy to find thrown away candy there.
“De La Vega? Really? That’s so awesome!” Draco grinned. Obviously it was a very good name, she grinned back. “I know, my dad is the best!” She joined him down to the Great Hall while they talked about her made up family. “So do you help him sometimes?” Draco asked. She looked like she didn’t have a clue of what he was talking about and he quickly added. “I mean with making new spells and stuff, your fathers books are the best. I can’t believe he fought all those wizards with his own created spells! Your father is a legend.”
“I know, sometimes I do. He says I am a natural with magic, the teachers have already asked me to take more advanced classes.” She continued bragging while Draco listened interested. “Then why don’t you?” He asked, ops..she hadn’t thought about that one. “I-I don’t want to, because I don’t want to seem too superior. It will only make my fellow students lose motivation.” Draco nodded. “Yeah, but do you think you could teach me some of your dad’s spells, that would have been so cool.” He said. Jinx swallowed, looking a little bit pale. “Y-eah sure.” She stuttered. Luckily Draco didn’t notice.

After a few weeks it didn’t take long before the teachers realized Jinx had problems learning. Her lack of basic knowledge as reading and writing kept her down. It made her lie behind in both Potions, Charms and Defense Against the Dark Arts. She was having so much troubles with the subjects that Snape finally took responsibility and said he could teach her what she had missed.
Instead of having lunch with the others Snape was tutoring her. And she wasn’t a very good student. “Now what ingredient is next?” Snape asked annoyance attached to his voice. She had absolutely no idea, but didn’t dare to ask. The facial expression Snape was giving her didn’t look welcoming. “I-I, this one.” She grabbed something that looked like a green root and before Snape could stop her, she had put it in the Potion. “Oh no!” He mumbled, seeing the Potion turn dark green. Bubbles grew bigger and it looked more like slime. She swallowed as both of the leaped for the door. Jinx was quickest, but Snape wasn’t that lucky.
There was a large explosion, slime going everywhere. Snape walked outside the classroom, finding Jinx looking up at him sheepishly. He was covered in green slime from head to toe. His black greasy hair full of it. His eyes were screaming red and it looked like he was about to boil over. He gripped her arm and she winced away. “Clean this up. Now!” He ordered. Jinx nodded shakily. Taking out her wand and trying to use a cleaning spell. Which did not work. Instead of vanishing the green slime increased. “I’ll take that!” he growled and snapped the wand out of her hands before storming off.
Cleaning up the slime was a nightmare, it just didn’t want to go away. No matter what she did. It began getting dark, but the slime was still there. Snape entered with his usual scowl and looked down at her, the pathetic Jinx. A cruel smirk approached on his lips, while he looked down at the struggling girl. “Do you need help?” He asked, enjoying the moment. Jinx put down the brush and allowed herself to sit down at the slimy floor. She brought her knees up to her chest, feeling pathetic. “Well!?” He barked. She nodded, still not looking up at him, at the edge of tears. With a quick wave of his wand all the slime disappeared with the blink of an eye and there were no sign of any explosion in the room.
