Maddox was gone when dad came to get us for dinner. He looked stressed out, so while mom was still in the living room, I asked.
"It's bad. Whatever Maddox came to tell you, isn't it?"
"It's not good. That's for sure." Dad said, before glancing at Marco.
"Did you want me to go check on your wife? And the baby?" He asked politely.
"No, I'm sure Romeao will be making you aware of the situation shortly as well, so I guess me telling you or talking about around you isn't going to make a difference."
"Alright. I'm all ears then."
"Maddox came to alert me that his men found a few bodies that didn't belong to them or their activities and they are concerned that there is an active serial killer on the loose. Alexi ran the faces of some of the newer bodies, and they were from all over the place. All from our district, but from all the towns."
"Yikes. What does he want done about it?" I asked.
"He's asked us to do our jobs and find this person. He's willing to lend us anything we need to make this quicker, but he is concerned that it will shed light on his illegal activities."
"Yes, the news of a serial killer will attract unwanted attention." Marco said, looking concerned himself now. Pulling a hand through his hair, he looked at me. "Please be extra careful while you're working."
"Of course. I have no interest in being the next victim of a killer."
"I doubt anyone does." My dad said, frowning intensely.
"Eh, you never know. There are some freaks out there." I said flatly. My dad shook his head and went and fetched my mother. I sighed, and Marco smiled softly at me. I liked it more than I cared to admit at the moment.
"They like Wren." I whispered.
"Good, I'm glad."
I liked Wren too.
Dad came back, Mom right behind him with Wren in her arms, her smile large and genuine. Dad and I brought all the food to the table, along with all the plates and utensils to serve it. While mom and Marco chatted, Marco ate while holding Wren and feeding him, too. I watched him the entire time, too distracted by his parenting to really eat. He looked at me while feeding a chunk of chicken to Wren.
"I should have bought a high chair." I hummed.
"We can get one another time. I'm sure this is not the last time Marco and Wren will come for dinner." My mother said, her eyes shining with glee.
"Of course Wren and I would be happy to come back for dinner, as long as we are welcome to join Ambrose."
Dinner finished not long after, and Marco helped my mother with the playpen and getting Wren ready for bed. Marco put Wren down for bed, and we were practically shewed away by my mother to my spare room. She claimed to have things under control and assured us we should turn in for the night. Marco chuckled when he closed the door behind us.
"I think I might have to fight your mother for my child back."
"She probably is thinking that this is the closest to a grandchild she will have and wants to savour it."
"You don't want children?" Marco asked suddenly.
"Maybe, but not alone. I want the entire family unit. Two parents and some fortunate children with good childhoods."
"Hm."
"What?"
"Just trying to find where Wren and I fit. If you will have us, that is."
