Thursday night. Skyler was going to tell Nakoa on thursday night. The iconic "will you dance with me?" scene would play out. Cheesy music, lights turned off but the natural light from the auditorium doors would spill into the large space.
Everything would go perfectly. Skyler would tell Koa how he felt, Koa would mirror those feelings...they would kiss...but..that isn't the case here. This was never going to happen. At least, other than in Skyler's dreams.
Why? Why wouldn't Skyler's story have a happy ending. Ella is why. Nakoa asked her to the dance on Monday. He was so excited..but then again, who wouldn't be? Anyone would've been overjoyed if they scored a date with a really pretty girl from school, it was practically human nature.
Either way, Skyler was annoyed when Koa told him the news. He was hoping that he and Koa would end up together. But Nakoa's straight. Skyler didn't seem to stand a chance — he was scrawny, kind of short and mostly average looking. He was a closeted bisexual — very few of his friends knew, Koa included. He even kept this from his sister. They usually told each other EVERYTHING...but not this.
This was something he had to handle on his own.
<< time skip to the dance ! thursday night ! >>
Koa walked up to the check in table and put his name down.
"Hey, has anyone named Ella checked in? Eighth grade list?" He asked a teacher working at the check-in.
"Sorry, she hasn't. She might want to hurry if she wants to make it on time. Doors close in 15," she said in a monotone voice.Koa walked away disappointed since he wanted to be here with her. He tried to convince himself that yes, I like girls. I like girls, girls only..no boys, and he asked Ella out for that reason only. He tried to convince himself that he was straight. But deep down, he knew that girls just weren't for him.
Koa walked to the snack bar and bought himself an orange Fanta, then headed towards a sad looking boy at the tables. He had a white dress shirt and black pants with his usual sneakers, his hair done and his regular blue rimmed glasses switched out for black ones. He just sat there, sad as rain on a birthday.
"Hey, why are you here? Where's your date?" A familiar voice asked, looking up from his daze. Skyler. He could tell this boy anything and he would listen.
"She.." he hesitated. "She didn't come to the dance." Ding ! Koa got a notification on his phone and looked to check what it was. "It's from Ella," he said. He read the text out loud to his friend. "Hey Koa, I can't make it to the dance since I got super busy last minute. Sorry."
"Damn," Skyler said. He looked back up at Koa, who seemed hurt from the text. "One. That, my friend, seems like a you problem," Skyler smiled while Koa glared at him menacingly. "Two...I could be your replacement date." (a/n - very smooth.)Nakoa looked at the boy in front of him, confused. But he agreed. Skyler grabbed Koa's hand and led him to one of the games in a random corner.
"Limbo? Really?" Koa questioned him, while Skyler only shrugged.
"Hey, all I did was walk until i found a corner. Not my fault it was completely random," Skyler rolled his eyes and laughed."Do you guys actually wanna play or just stand there?" A voice attempted to shout over the loudspeakers. It was Alex Santiago, one of the weirder kids. They usually got along with most people.
"Yeah, we'll play!" Skyler said.Afrer doing multiple rounds of Limbo and winning a crap ton of candy, Koa eventually dragged his new date away from the stand. Hell, that bowl of candy, even though it was small, was nearly empty. If Skyler won a couple more times, all the candy would be gone. But he was happy with what he got for now, so Skyler was happily whisked away with full pockets.
