Morticia woke to her husband tossing and turning. He was muttering something in his sleep, clearly distraught. She rubbed her eyes and took in the scene. This type of behavior was out of character for Gomez. He never tossed and turned in his sleep, and she couldn't remember him ever being bothered by a dream before. She sat up and stroked his hair.
Suddenly, he cried out and his eyes opened. He looked around the room, panic clearly displayed on his face. His eyes stopped moving when he saw Morticia looking down at him. He fixated on her, and tears appeared in the corners of his eyes.
"Oh, darling!" Morticia stroked his cheek. "It was only a dream. There's nothing to be afraid of."
Gomez only cried harder and turned away from her.
"Darling, what's wrong?" she asked, trying to turn him back to her. He only sobbed harder. "Bubele?" she whispered, knowing how comforting that name was for him. He showed no response. She was taken aback. She had never seen him act this way. Swallowing her mounting fear, she got out of bed and walked over to his side.
"Come, my love," she whispered, reassuringly. "Let's go down to the kitchen and get you a nice hot cup of henbane."
He slowly got out of bed, still not saying a word. She took his arm and led him downstairs.
"You sit here, darling," she said, leading him over to the small sofa in the living room. "I'll be right back with your henbane. That should soothe your poor nerves."
She brushed his face with her hand and turned away. She went down to the kitchen and made Gomez his drink. She thought for a moment and then made another for herself. She placed everything on a tray and carried it back up to him. She walked back upstairs, placed the tray on a side table, and turned back to him. His tears had slowed, and he was staring at the floor.
"Darling, I've brought you some henbane," she said, in a low, soothing voice. "Won't you take it? It'll make you feel much better, I'm sure."
He finally looked up at her. Their eyes met and she gave him a tiny smile. Suddenly, he stood up and buried his face in her chest, and his tears began anew. She gasped in surprise, then wrapped her arms around him. She stroked his hair and kissed the top of his head.
"Oh darling!" she empathized. "Everything is alright. I'm here, my love. Please, tell me what's wrong."
He pulled away, then sat down and pulled her onto his lap. She continued to stroke his hair and looked into his tearful eyes. He was still crying, and he had his arms wrapped tightly around her.
"Y-you didn't l-ove me," he managed to get out.
"Darling!" she gasped, gently guiding his face so that she could look into his eyes. "That would never happen! It was only a nightmare. That's all."
"I d-didn't love you either," he added. "We didn't h-have a choice."
This surprised Morticia. She didn't quite understand how someone could take away their ability to love one another, even in a dream. She had assumed that, in the dream, she had chosen not to love him.
"Whatever do you mean, my love?" she asked.
"Aliens took over our bodies," he continued, his tears slowing now. "We were so in love, and then, we felt nothing for each other."
Morticia began to feel upset just thinking about this. No wonder Gomez had woken up in tears. She tightened her arms around him and laid her head on his shoulder.
"I don't think even an alien possessing my body could really stop me from loving you," she assured him. "My love is too strong for that."
He gave a small smile. His tears had completely stopped now.
She sat up a little bit and brought her face up to his. She leaned in and planted a kiss on his lips. He sat up straighter and pulled her closer to him. She kissed him again, longer now and more passionate. He kissed her back, and his hands went into her hair. They were both overcome with passion now, the horrible nightmare almost completely forgotten. Gomez stood up, lifting Morticia into the air as he did so. She wrapped her legs around him as he carried her back up to their bedroom without breaking their kiss.
This story was inspired by the movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956). It's an awesome black-and-white movie, and Carolyn Jones has a supporting role in it! If you haven't seen it, you should go check it out!
