Chapter 6
(Stephen's Operating Room)
Stephen...
My eyes popped open to both my cellphone and the house phone simultaneously ringing. Groaning, I rolled over and blinked until my vision cleared enough for me to read the digital numbers on the bedside clock, 2:37 a.m. in the morning.
"Hello." I croaked into the mouthpiece of my cell phone.
"Um... Dr. Giles, I am sorry to disturb on your vacation and at this time of the morning. But there was a severe residential fire earlier this evening and several people were injured in the incident. Dr. Pope and Dr. Carlisle have treated a majority of them, but the chief of staff is specifically requesting your services for the last patient. A sixteen year old girl that sustained third degree burns over sixty percent of her body." Cecelia, the medical staff secretary explained and I instantly wide awake and getting out of bed. This patient must be either at death's door or related to someone extremely important for administration to be contacting at this time of the morning.
"Send me all the details and everything she has underwent in her treatment up until this point. I will be there hopefully with the next three to four hours." I stated as I started hunting through my closet for something to wear.
"Dr. Giles, I have been informed by the family of the teenager that they are more than willing to send their private helicopter for you. Dr. Moore said if you are okay with it then he is okay with it. The pilot will need the closest point of reference in order to land without disturbing any landscape and residence of your community." She sheepishly expressed and my eyebrows shot up to my hairline.
"Do I need to know the identity of this young lady before I open her treatment file, Cecelia." I asked not because I would treat my patient any differently than all my other patients. I just need to be prepared and know what I am dealing with so I don't walk into the situation completely blind.
"Let's see, Ms. Kara Milano is the only daughter of the famous world renowned Italian Chef, Rafael Milano, owner of several five star bistros and restaurants across the country duly named after him. Her uncles are major benefactors to the Hospital and to your burn unit. They are multimillionaires Ellis Carrington and his husband Timothy Carrington. Dr. Moore himself is Kara's attending physician and Dr. Carlisle has been rendering treatment to the young lady so far, but Dr. Moore wants the best called in on her case as a courtesy to the family, and Dr. Carlisle has even asked for you to be called as well. The details of the fire in their residence is detailed in her History and Physical report I am sending to you now." She revealed and I vaguely recollected meeting the Carrington's from one of charity balls, a very attractive and formidable power couple indeed.
"Okay Cecelia, the closest helipad that I can think of is located at the local medical center here. It's called Breaker's Cove Medical Center. I guess you know what to do in regards to getting their permission to land and all that. I'll be there within the next half hour, please text me with whatever instructions I'll need to get onto this helicopter." I said before I disconnected the call, dropped the phone on the bed, and pulled my sweater over my head.
I shoved my feet into my deck shoes and I collected my wallet, my keys, and my cell phone and headed for my study. I picked up my medical bag and my laptop case and then I stopped in my tracks. Fuck, after spending almost half the evening yesterday cuddling on the beach with Luis, I had promised to take him to breakfast at one of the seafront diners this morning. Crap, I don't even have his cell phone number to leave him a message or anything. I tapped my fingers against the case of my iPad and contemplated how I was going to get a message to him just as Kathryn poked her head through the door.
